Mosul, Iraq (CNN) -- The last U.S. brigade combat team has left Iraq, leaving about 56,000 U.S. troops in the country, according to the U.S. military.
Capt. Christopher Ophardt, spokesman for the 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, said the last of the 4,000 members of the unit were in armored vehicles crossing the border into Kuwait early Thursday.

Certainly a step in the right direction, albeit a small step.

The cost of this, not economic, but human cost.... it breaks my heart

One could rework Churchills famous "never have so many owed so much...." quote, and certainly not in a good wayAll of that blood and fortune to satisfy the demons of the few.

I am surprised this isn't generating a response... it is historic

Under the current agreement, should a coup or radical uprising occur, the Iraqi Government can request US troops to initiate combat operations again.

It's a press release. Let's see how quickly the 50,000 turn into combat troops when somebody starts shooting at them with some success.

At some point we're going to have to let go of the reins.  They're never going to step up and govern with us there.

As long as there is an American presence there the "trip wire"is in effect .....with or without a formal agreement.

We will always have a military presence there.

Yea, I was watching it on the tv last night as the last few of the convoy pulled into Kuwait.  One of the reporters said the smell of cigar smoke was real thick as the combat troops were pulling into the US base in Kuwait.  They said the 50,000 troops remaining will be there to guide and advise Iraqi's as they move forward, and will be there to help protect the Iraqi's that risked their lives and their families lives to help US soldiers complete their missions while the war was going on.  It'll be called Project New Dawn (don't quote me on the exact name, but its something Dawn lol)
