Every few years some one hits the street with either the preamble to the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence.

Every few years a larger percentage of folks think it is communist.

LOL What's worse is that they also identify statements taken directly from communist leaders and identify them as things in the constitution.
The same people. LOL

Last 4th of July, a poll showed some astounding number of Americans couldn't correctly note the U.S. won its independence from Great Britain.

The most popular answer was Russia, followed by several bizarre guesses--including Czechoslovakia, Canada, and France.

I don't remember the percentages, but most--MOST--couldn't get it right.

Lots of people think they will come to Canada and see polar bears too.

The minute before he was elected it was all about where is Obama, and let us now kill Hussein so it is not that hard to imagine where people get some of their ill-formed opinions from.

Sarah being a nuke physicist though, I dunno? Because she wears suits and glasses?

Yea, I guess we've all had a chance to show how much (or little) we know, how rational (and irrational) we are.  Sometimes its frustrating to hear opinions we don't agree with (on ALL sides).  But with threads like this...its fun to make fun of it.

And heartcream, if all it takes is a suit and glasses then I need to change my image.  But Sarah Palin probably figures she's making more money writing books and making speeches and revving people up.  She couldn't keep her mind on her own job in Alaska, much less keep it on nuclear physics.

"Perceptions" is an apt title for this thread...

The report (here) in Time, if that's the source the OP is working from, does not in fact say that "more than a third of conservative Republicans" think Obama is a Muslim, or (clue) that 89% of all respondents who think Obama is a Muslim also think Sarah Palin is a nuclear physicist.

Actually, it says among other things that a majority of Americans would have no problem with a community center and mosque two blocks from their home, and think that Muslims are patriotic Americans. In fact, the percentages reported are higher than Obama's approval rating!

The article references an Abt SRBI poll conducted August 16-17 which hasn't yet been released on the Abt SRBI website (link).

Technically, Obama may be considered a Muslim by some. From an article entitled "President Apostate?" in the New York Times:

quote:

But it is a mistake to conflate his African identity with his Muslim heritage. Senator Obama is half African by birth and Africans can understandably identify with him. In Islam, however, there is no such thing as a half-Muslim. Like all monotheistic religions, Islam is an exclusive faith.

As the son of the Muslim father, Senator Obama was born a Muslim under Muslim law as it is universally understood. It makes no difference that, as Senator Obama has written, his father said he renounced his religion. Likewise, under Muslim law based on the Koran his mother’s Christian background is irrelevant.

Of course, as most Americans understand it, Senator Obama is not a Muslim. He chose to become a Christian, and indeed has written convincingly to explain how he arrived at his choice and how important his Christian faith is to him.

His conversion, however, was a crime in Muslim eyes; it is “irtidad” or “ridda,” usually translated from the Arabic as “apostasy,” but with connotations of rebellion and treason. Indeed, it is the worst of all crimes that a Muslim can commit, worse than murder (which the victim’s family may choose to forgive).

But there is a distinction between Muslim heritage, Muslim faith and Muslim law. Under the theocracy of Muslim law the above may be correct. Muslim heritage requires no particular fealty as it is only a history and one...free not to inherit.

Muslim faith is quite another thing and as in other faiths, one is free to make that leap...or not. Once one renounces a faith then he is free to inherit what he wishes from heritage and is no longer subject to Muslim 'law.'

Once there, in our eyes, he is no longer an apostate. We cannot and do not judge people by the faiths they have chosen to renounce.

Hell, the Bill of Rights wouldn't pass congress anytime. Most of them don't have a clue as to what they are reading.

I learned with your last thread, Kirata, that it is important to click on the links you post, and not just take what you say for granted And in reading the first link, it doesn't say anything (that I could read, but I'm working, so just skimmed) about Sarah Palin.

And in the second link you posted.  Speaking Republican-wise (and as much as the rest of his family is unpopular) my vote would go to Jeb.

While it does restore (some) of my faith in what Americans believe...it was still fun poking fun.

And indeed...perceptions are always what makes things interesting.  This section of the forum kinda shows us that all the time!

White House says Obama is Christian, prays daily

The Associated Press

Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010 | 11:06 a.m.

The White House insisted on Thursday that President Barack Obama is a Christian who prays daily as it looked to tamp down growing doubts among Americans about the president's religion.

White House spokesman Bill Burton made the remarks hours after a poll showed that nearly one in five people, or 18 percent, said they think Obama is Muslim. That was up from 11 percent who said so in March 2009. The survey also showed that just 34 percent said Obama is Christian, down from 48 percent who said so last year. The largest share of people, 43 percent, said they don't know his religion.

As Obama headed out for a vacation, Burton told reporters aboard Air Force One that most Americans care more about the economy and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and "they are not reading a lot of news about what religion the president is."

Burton added, "The president is obviously a Christian. He prays everyday."
