I've had 3 dental implants ($500 each). I have 5 crowns ($180 each) I get teeth cleaned for $20. All the care I have gotten is all great!! That is SO SOOOOOO tempting! One could easily dump 40k into the teeth.

Funny story. i had a bunch of dental work done a few years ago. By "a bunch", i mean 2 crowns, 2 root canals, multiple cavities, and a cleaning. (It had been several years since my last checkup). I was there so long that they forgot to prescribe any painkiller, for when the novocaine wore off. i didn't notice. i was just happy to get out of there after sitting for so many hours in that chair. i was running out the door. When i went back, to get the replacement caps, they asked how many pills i had left. "What pills?", i said. They both just looked at me. Ah. The dangers of being a masochist. But, really, i barely noticed the discomfort. Apparently, that's really weird. pam

Root canal, are you kidding me ? With all your Rense and Alex you have not researched this ? This is the worst thing you can do, you know anyone who had one ? I do, a couple of people. Your teeth are bones and are supposed to be part of your skeletal structure. They are supposed to be as alive as your tibula and fibula, your ulnar and radii. The root canal procedure kills them. That results in dental osteoporosis. A root canal removes the connection, and to fathom that, think this. Have them take the bones out of your arms and reimplant them. They will decay. They are then dead. Got it ? With teeth being bones, and they kill them, the ADA and everybody knows that the teeth will eventually decay and they will make more money. You ae the worst conspiracy theorist on this board and you can't recognize a real one right in front of your face ? T

PA, You need to verify your meds with your dentist. Pennicillin is an antibiotic and with all antibiotics should be taken until the entire script is done regardless of how you feel. It is NOT a med to be taken on an as needed basis. Typically a 10 day supply but can be written for much longer depending on the severity and/or when you can get scheduled back in for your procedure. If you are in need of a root canal it is common for pennicillin to be taken to prevent the infection from getting worse and to hopefully kill the infection off so that you can proceed with the root canal. If you have an infection there is a risk of the novacaine not working. If you are having pain with that tooth the pain is from the infection and pennicillin will relieve the pain quickly only because it is getting rid of the infection itself. She may have intended to write you a script for percocet which is a pain med. It would make sense then for her to tell you to take it only if you need it. A root canal is a last ditch effort to save a tooth. The decay has gone to the roots so a simple filling will not work. The root canal cleans out the decay and nerves from the tooth. A cap is needed to protect the weak tooth so you can keep it for as long as possible. There is no real guarrantee on how long you will keep that tooth; but dentist are in favor of keeping as many original teeth as possible. Some root canals can be done with little or no pain. Yet others can be quite sore. It would all depend on how deep the root is, the severity of the infection, etc. You do not want to put this off and run the risk of getting an absess. Now there is no doubt about the pain involved - EXTREME! An absess can cause all kinds of damage that is not limited to your mouth. As someone stated earlier, if there is a dental school nearby you may want to call them for pricing. There are some charities that may help. Some dentists will make financing available. You may want to ask your dentist what options they have or if they can suggest something. Best of luck to you.

You're right, Termy. A derooted tooth will eventually go bad and abcess. Too bad price is an issue. If you plan to live long maybe the best solution is an implant and crown. That is very expensive. Or you can just have the damned thing pulled and not replace it with an implant.

Last night- the temp cap fell off. SO I had to run to the store for fixadent. This dentist is very hands- on. It is a small office- not an assembly line.

Termy, I have several root canal. There's never been any bone erosion. Have you ever gone without a root canal when it was needed? That's a major disaster, like I related with my cousin. I worked at a place where my boss's girlfriend ended up in the ICU because of an abscessed tooth. If a tooth is pulled, it needs to be replaced with something. I've been lucky with teeth. I've been hit right in the mouth with a 2X4 and still have them all. I haven't been to a dentist since I was a kid having my baby teeth pulled, no tooth fairy for me. But over the years I've eaten differently than most, plus it might be hereditary. Both my Parents lost their teeth, but my Grandfather kept his all his life. Sometimes these things skip a generation. I'm reevaluating alot of things these days. Details later. T
