My brother had a great conversation with a customer service rep from Dell.  He's programs and runs the network where he works and this was the business support line for the higher end business servers.

Brother:  The mother board blew out.
Dell:        I need you to run the dell diagnostic software.
Brother:  The motherboard is blown, it has scorch marks on it.  The computer is dead.
Dell:        I need you to run the dell diagnostic software
Brother:   The motherboard has scorch marks on it, I can smell where it burned.  It is dead.
Dell:        I can't help you until you run the diagnostic software.
Brother:  OK, I ran the software for you.
Dell:        What did it say?
Brother:   It said send me a fucking motherboard.

That was an American call center.  His boss finally let my brother build all of the servers instead of buying them after that.

Those scripts drive me nuts!  I even run into something similar at work; their first solution is to reboot the computer.  Then do procedure 2 a few times.  Then procedure 3.

I've done all of those several times.  So I whup them upside the head to just remote in and fix the bloody thing (usually was a missing/corrupted roaming profile).

The funny thing is they had another go around with Dell.

They received an order and there was an extra server.  It was given back to the UPS driver and returned to Dell.  Several days later it reappears.  Dell had sent it right back to them.

My brother called Dell and was told, "No you never received that computer".  His response was, "I am sitting here with my feet propped up on the box".  the guy at Dell insisted  no such computer existed. 

They sent it back to Dell a 2nd time.  Within a week the UPS driver was dropping the computer off to them again.  this time they jut said the hell with it and started using it.  Dell never asked for it back nor sent a bill.
