I really recommend reading this article before responding... it is really interesting

I don't think it is a myth, I just think the cougar moniker is silly. I dated younger men since I was 25.

The only cougar thing is my ability to wear leopard print well. [;)]

juliaoceania -> RE: Are Cougars a Myth? (8/20/2010 8:21:07 AM)

The article debates whether this is a new trend or not in American dating.

sexyred1 -> RE: Are Cougars a Myth? (8/20/2010 8:22:32 AM)

No, I actually read it, I know. I just think that it was a 90's thing, the new speed dating, Cougars and Cubs, etc. Just another entry into the pop culture land.

As I said, I think older women have dated younger men for a long time, it was not spoken about as readily or accepted.

juliaoceania -> RE: Are Cougars a Myth? (8/20/2010 8:27:04 AM)

I would agree with that. I think the fact that women are becoming more economically self sufficient and successful is leading to younger men hooking up with them. Kinda like older men with younger women. Sure, some younger people like dating middle aged folks... but I think economic security makes us more attractive (is that jaded?)

sexyred1 -> RE: Are Cougars a Myth? (8/20/2010 8:29:47 AM)

Not jaded, realistic maybe.

Although, I will say, in my case, I was never with any younger guy where money was an issue. It was more of a chemical attraction, not fiscal. [;)]

VaguelyCurious -> RE: Are Cougars a Myth? (8/20/2010 8:38:29 AM)

I don't know-I skimmed the article, and the study cited seems to be based exclusively on personal ads-wouldn't that be skewed by the fact that not everyone finds dates through personals? And also that what people write isn't necessarily what they end up going for?

I couldn't see citation of any other studies in favour of the conclusion.

juliaoceania -> RE: Are Cougars a Myth? (8/20/2010 8:42:16 AM)

It is a Time article, meaning pop culture, not an academic article...

You are right, what people say and what they do are two different things

Wait, someone who knows what she wants and doesn't need to play games? Where?

Have you ever watched that film "The Reader"?

sexyred1 -> RE: Are Cougars a Myth? (8/20/2010 10:10:53 AM)

The Reader was a great film.

BoiJen -> RE: Are Cougars a Myth? (8/20/2010 10:57:53 AM)

My number of dating partners is kinda small (go figure), my number of sex partners is still small but a little larger than the dating partners. With that in mind, it's not about economics. At least, for me, it isn't. Until we moved to Florida Ma'am and I did not "intermingle" our financial status. We split the bills evenly and the costs for luxury items we wanted, we paid for on our own. Until I moved to Detroit, I was working a great job, with little free time, but a decent pay check. I paid for my dates. I paid for the drinks at the bar, and once or twice I paid for a hotel room. I am fortunate enough that, in this economic climate, I can still work and go to school and be partnered and in service to a woman who wants me to have the education I'm getting now. But make no mistake about it, for her it's a business decision to make it affordable for me to go to school. "PhD" spells "IRA" for her. This is an understood trade off between the both of us.

For me, it's a matter of sex and conversation. I can't hold a damned conversation with most folks my age. I seriously can't. My pop culture references are stuck in a range from the 60's-the mid 90's. I LIKE to watch the weather channel and the news. I discuss politics in a real world way and like to examine the socio-economic impact political action and changes within subcultures over the last century. And sex with pretty young things is fun for about ten minutes. They're very fun and pretty to look at. But damnit, for the most part, they can't fuck for shit. This is not the case for older women. My sexual escapades, few as they are, with older women compared to younger women is simply, hands down, in favor of the older women.

Shallow as I am, I refused to have to choose between young and pretty and older and smart...I ended up finding the older, pretty, and pretty smart woman that I serve today. I was prepared when the opportunity came and I did everything I possibly could to get her attention. I was not actively seeking but I knew what I wanted and what that looked like when I stumbled across the Want in Detroit.

So, are cougars a "myth"? No. The only fool saying such is the one who's pissed cuz he's missing out on the great opportunities with women his own age because that would mean he has to work at looking good and being fun.

juliaoceania -> RE: Are Cougars a Myth? (8/20/2010 11:05:27 AM)

I dated a couple of older men, and it was not about the money they had...

I will say that often women have historically been attracted to men with power and resources. This does not mean their attraction was not genuine, but that part of what appealed was the success of a man. Otherwise, why is it the successful men of resources that get the young hot babes? My point is that perhaps young men are likewise motivated by the success of a woman, and the power it gives to her to make such decisions as involving herself with whatever sort of relationship she deems fits her needs.

The cubs...they is "submissive" to the wiles of successful women...yes....

flcouple2009 -> RE: Are Cougars a Myth? (8/20/2010 11:14:23 AM)

I think some women are looking for younger guys the same way some men look for younger women.

The Mr here just seems to always attract younger women for whatever reason.  The Mrs has been always been attracted to older men (attraction to women on the other hand has nothing to do age).

DomKen -> RE: Are Cougars a Myth? (8/20/2010 5:05:12 PM)

When I was in my twenties I prefered dating older women, there was less drama and bullshit. Now I date near my own age.

For myths I had a lot of good times with cougars.

I don't think money and success work directly for attracting men. If anything, it would still be slightly intimidating to be walking around with a CEO and to be still in university.

The resulting confidence and "I know what I want from my life" attitude might be the key.

Among other reasons.

wandersalone -> RE: Are Cougars a Myth? (8/21/2010 2:57:43 AM)

I have dated men younger than me for most of my life and they were chosen purely because we were physically and mentally attracted to each other.  My (less than kind) friends would say I attract younger guys because I am just a tad immature [:D]

The person I am seeing now is only 4 years younger than me but boy is he way more grown up!!!!!

DemonKia -> RE: Are Cougars a Myth? (8/21/2010 5:43:59 AM)

Hmmmm. Well, probably half the guys who cruise my profile are in their 20s or 30s . . . . & I prefer to date younger guys, it just works better all around .. . .

Oh. & I'm really not into money. I prefer a guy who rides a bicycle to a guy who's gonna blather on & on about his stupid car . . . . . . & I'll pay for the coffee.

I vote that the article was crappy fluff, no offense to the OP . . . .. .

pahunkboy -> RE: Are Cougars a Myth? (8/21/2010 5:54:12 AM)

They never grow up- so ya may as well get a pretty one.

BTW- WTF?   Suddenly I got a bunch of potential dates.    It must be a hidden camera show.

As to the OP-  yeah-   we all should have a toy boy.
