That list also contained names of Iraq's and Afghani's.

Dave mentioned Rich being judge and jury... Assange did the same by leaking those reports. If he had blacked out the names, i would have not had a problem with the "leak".

juliaoceania -> RE: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange accused of rape (8/21/2010 10:19:19 AM)

So the only lives that matter are the ones your government say that matter?

You can understand why some might take issue with that position.. our government has done bad things. We have killed innocent people. Our people do not even know the full extent of this, so someone comes along and tries to enlighten us, and they get demonized as putting lives at risk... what about our government?

And no, I am not the person that supports my government right or wrong...

I do not think that posting everything on the internet is a good idea... but look at the double standard here. Dick Cheney and Karl Rove out an agent and nothing happens to them.... this guy isn't even an American and he gets demonized....

NeedToUseYou -> RE: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange accused of rape (8/21/2010 10:22:55 AM)

They withdrew the rape charges....

That was fast, now the conversation can revolve around, if the government is the only one that can endanger lives, in total secrecy, and freely release lies, with no method of verification.

tazzygirl -> RE: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange accused of rape (8/21/2010 10:23:22 AM)

No, the lives that matter are the one's in those reports. Please stop putting words in my mouth. As i said, black out the names, no problem. These people, right or wrong, gave us a service. Some were paid, others did so in the firm belief that they were supporting their own countries.

As far as Cheney and Rove, they both should have been shot. None of them should have been any less than arrested for treason. What they did was wrong, so was what Assange did. The difference? Assange is not an american. He didnt out a fellow countryman. The other two idiots did.

ThatDaveGuy69 -> RE: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange accused of rape (8/21/2010 10:28:59 AM)

If the WikiLeaks lists get US tropps out of the Afghan war even 1 day sooner then it was worth it.

All those lives that may - or may not - be in danger should not have been put in that position in the first place.

~Dave

tazzygirl -> RE: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange accused of rape (8/21/2010 10:31:42 AM)

But now they are, all because Assange decided they should be. Again, he should have to take responsibility for his decision. Which is why the news agencies around the world are condemning his actions.

Hold the government responsible for their actions. I whole heartedly agree. I do not agree with putting other lives at risk merely to create a news drama for the day.

Who could that have been avoided? Blacking out names. They do it all the time.

ThatDaveGuy69 -> RE: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange accused of rape (8/21/2010 10:36:28 AM)

How better to hold a government accountable than to name names?
Blacking them out would have seriously diminished the impact of the documents.

I also suspect that if he had blacked out the names he would have been called a coward.

In your opinion a coward. In my opinion a journalist more concerned about the story than what others "may" say.

A drone strike? So now you're the judge and jury? Any other parts of the Constitution you'd care to toss aside while you're at?

What parts of the Constitution am I tossing, Dave? He's a foreign national providing aid and comfort to our enemies. Even if he is only stupid, instead of malicious, he is creating a legitimate threat that needs to be addressed.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange accused of rape (8/21/2010 10:55:56 AM)

This thread reminds me of the "outing" of a CIA operative whose husband (an ambassador) claimed that there was no uranium being shipped to Iraq.

gotta laugh at AMERICANS complaining about that crap - when they were delighted to home CONVICTED IRA terrorists as their crimes were "political" (yeah women
and children are political targets for sure) and refuse to extradite them for their crimes

America - land of the hypocritical and pathetic - the more shit like this you spew, the more enemies you gather and the more you inspire them

"your enemies" ? you have NO REAL FRIENDS - deal with it - you buy Israel off and everyone else secretly want to see you bleed again

Jeffff -> RE: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange accused of rape (8/21/2010 10:59:32 AM)

Exactly, Something should have happened in that case also.

You can not go through life believing there can be no secrets.

I have no problem if someone wants to take a stand. I have a huge problem if they do want to deal with the consequences.

I believe that call that.......... being a pussy.

ThatDaveGuy69 -> RE: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange accused of rape (8/21/2010 11:02:16 AM)

How about that whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing?
How about the right to a trial (preferably BEFORE being executed)?
Oh, and that quaint notion of "due process".

But what the heck, if the president can target US citizens for assassination then why not a foreign national?!

~Dave

Now you've got it! Exactly.

Oh, wait. You seem to think this is more of a bad thing, than an ugly reality. I probably can't help you much with those glasses.

pahunkboy -> RE: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange accused of rape (8/21/2010 11:07:46 AM)

So let me get this straight.

according to the establishment- only embedded reporting is allowed.

do you know what that amounts to?

Take it up with Obama if you don't like his policy of killing people (along with thier families) with no trial.

Nobody should ever try to expose the truth because it is far toooo dangerous. Furthermore powerful people should never be shamed for the things they agree behind closed doors. No no no no no.

Right I'm going out to get me some government sanctioned information as to what they be getting up to. I'm so happy we are always killing the right people and putting aside that legal system we parade in the faces of those despotic regimes.

We do things the right way because we are The West, all you folks without due process bow down to us.

TheHeretic -> RE: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange accused of rape (8/21/2010 6:33:52 PM)

Get a grip, SL4. There is no grand truth in this mess. And the only backroom deals they contain are the ones the boots on the ground have made with the locals.

This is just a bunch of operational shit, stolen by a treasonous little punk (alleged), that is very likely to do nothing but get more people killed.

There are things that tip the balance of values towards the truth being told, despite the risks. Here, the risks outweigh the titilation.

Or do you just figure the more dead soldiers, the more cooperative afghans and their families slaughtered, the sooner your country and mine will stop our warmongering ways and there will be only happiness and love and sunshiny lollipops in our peaceful new world without the bad, bad, bad, US?
