Why would anyone want to please god ?

Why ?

Just because he is the head honcho of a religion, does that mean he has to be pleased, in which case I again ask why ?

With all the natural disasters that are happening around the world, big events that kill and mame people who have done nothing except just live, why please god, is it fear ?

If people around the world stopped putting faith into an entity which might or might not exist and started thinking for themselves, quite possibly when these natural disasters happen, more lives might be spared, or even humanity might learn to take the worst case scenario as it applies to where they live and there do everything possible to take the extreme in their stride. Instead, it is very uch a case of fingers crossed.

You're quoting a man who dropped dead of a heart attack after being"fine" at breakfast. A year before he had been quoted as identifying The End Times as near and presuming that the anti-Christ would be Jewish. If that's not God saying "take that mother fucker" I don't know what is.

Granting that some (or even many) who claim to believe in God do not think for themselves, as the examples posted by jlf1961 prove, I do not think that this is always true. Perhaps more to the point, I do not think that those examples are people who believe in God. Not one among them would hesitate for a moment to tell you that what they believe in is the Bible. And I would submit that it is precisely this which makes them examples of people who don't think for themselves.

He likes to quote christians saying stupid things because he feels that supports his opinion that all christians are hateful assholes. I wonder what he would do if someone else started linking muslim terrorist stories in all of their posts and claiming that made hating muslims ok. Oh wait, it's already happened and he jumped all over them. Can you say hypocrite.

Ya know, the really funny thing is that Falwell is a great example of an Evangelical Christian coming to God. After years and years of hate speech after crazy shit he said, even in all of it the man could still find himself in conflict. I like quoting Falwell for his crayz statements at times. What doesn't get quoted or pointed out is Falwell's role in hosting the "Anti-Violence Forum" in '99 where he said "I don't agree with your lifestyle, I will never agree with your lifestyle, but I love you" and "anything that leaves the impression that we hate the sinner, we want to change that."

According to the Christian Bible, we all struggle with finding God and the temptations of "Satan". "Satan" is many things, hate, greed, gluttony, etc. But in moments where a man who would later blame the victims of the 2001 attacks for "causing" them, this man found love. Even if only for the moment he was uttering those words. To me, that's God. In those moments, that's God.

If somebody can't find a moment to know that we as people will never understand how the Divine (not matter how it manifests itself) works and can't take the time to learn and appreciate the moments of clarity that we're granted with, fuck 'em. If all anybody can find is a point to be angry with "God", then that's their inner struggle. They can scream that they "don't believe in Him" all they want...but the more they affirm their inner struggle with the beliefs, the more the affirm their own belief.

I pity the fool who starts his day and continue through life being pissed off at God.

Considering that the "religious right" talking heads are a major part of the cable and satellite broadcast environment, and have a large following, you are saying that what they say is to be ignored? When you consider that half of the Republican base are non-Hispanic whites who are strongly religious, defined as those who attend church about once a week or more frequently. source

What I am pointing out is that the Conservative Right (i.e Republicans, the Religious Right, ultra conservative religious fundamentalists) have a lot of talking heads that do more to stir up conflict and bullshit. To deny this is hypocritical.

Look at the extremists groups that are part of the Conservative movement in America. Since the 80's the conservative movement has spawned the "Moral Majority," the extremist militia groups, militant and violent anti-abortion activists, gay bashing religious leaders, anti Semitic groups, anti-Muslim groups and of course the latest example of the "Christian Patriot Movement," the Hutaree militia.

Sorry, but in the christian household I was raised in, AND what I have read in the bible basically taught tolerance, not hatred. God is the judge, not men.

I also notice that no one seemed to have comments about the quotes from the living members of the Religious Right.

Are you making a connection between people who go to church and those who believe the crap being pushed by $300 haircuts on Sunday morning TV?

Conservativsm was recently characterized as resistant to change. These Christian Right lunatics want radical and fundamental changes that would recreate America as a Christian nation.

Talk about stirring up conflict and bullshit, you're no slouch yourself.

And conservative politicians are doing their best to get the religious right to vote for them.

By the way, Pat Robertson's 700 club is carried in 95% of the television markets, with about a million viewers a day, and many conservative politicians seek his endorsement during campaigns, or should that be ignored?

Heavens no, I don't think people like Pat Robertson should be ignored. I think their crap should be brought to the attention of the widest possible audience, so we can increase their following as much as possible among those susceptible to their message, and foment as much distress as possible among those who disagree. That's the sensible thing to do.

What is wrong with you?  You bitch and complain about God harassing you, but you're willingly going to spirituality websites and the like.  God isn't harassing you.  You're seeking God out, which makes me wonder if it's not just some deep-seeded desire to come home to whatever God suits you best.

The idiocy of this post is just...insane to me.

Maybe you just have a "deep-seeded" knowledge of things like that.

Maybe, but I find peace in a Goddess.  It all depends on what makes you happiest and brings you the most peace.

Considering what the Religious Right wants, it would be better for the politicians to ignore them, unless of course you have a problem with the separation of church and state.

The infamous battle cry of "The United States is a CHRISTIAN nation." When, in truth, the United States is based on the premise of "Freedom of Religion."

Pandering to the personal interests of voters in an effort to win them over is not a violation of the separation church and state. That's like having a problem with color-safe "bleach". It's not really "bleach" but it pretends and claims to be and, as such, it's violating the sanctity of making whites the whitest.

Now....

You have a great misunderstanding here. The Christian faith is supposed (cuz I actually know what's written in most Bibles...KJV doesn't count) to be based on ideals of charity and forgiveness. It is man's job only to forgive because Judgment and Forgiveness are God's responsibilities, so says the whole of the New Testament.

I was not praising Falwell, I was pointing one of the few times in which Falwell truly expressed sentiments found within the Christian faith as dictated by the New Testament. In that, in those few moments, Falwell was in touch with the God he preached for, reached for, and only rarely came to terms with. If you see that as "praising" Falwell instead of seeing God, instead of seeing the complex nature of Faith and humanity for what it is, then that's your problem and your assumption, not mine.
