$300 plus having to hire an accountant to handle earnings such as $11 per two years?  Holy cow, now I see why some people hide some of their "earnings."  Clearly it didn*t pay to be honest and report this.

Years back, my aunt's pre-teen kids got into trouble with the city (in California) years back for selling some homemade lemonaide for about a nickle or dime a glass.  Their stand had been made from a cardboard box...and written on in crayon.

There is a reason why I love to hear terrible jokes about politicians.

Jaysus.  It's a Philly thing.  What's that got to do with Obama?

It's not just directed at bloggers:
" Even though small-time bloggers aren't exactly raking in the dough, the city requires privilege licenses for any business engaged in any "activity for profit," says tax attorney Michael Mandale of Center City law firm Mandale Kaufmann."

There's a proposed change up for a vote: " In June, City Council members Bill Green and Maria Quiñones-Sánchez unveiled a proposal to reform the city's business privilege tax in an effort to make Philly a more attractive place for small businesses. If their bill passes, bloggers will still have to get a privilege license if their sites are designed to make money, but they would no longer have to pay taxes on their first $100,000 in profit. (If bloggers don't want to fork over $300 for a lifetime license, Green suggests they take the city's $50-a-year plan.)

Their bill will be officially introduced in September. "There's a lot of support and interest in this idea," Green says.""

So, if a blogger wants to make money and not pay for the license, they need to move out of Philly?

How in the world are the people in Philly going to know who is actually running the blog? Do they have a staff of people combing the web for Philly based bloggers?

SpiritedRadiance -> RE: Philly requiring bloggers to pay $300 for 'license'... (8/23/2010 6:49:27 PM)

Jlf- by looking into the websites registration and ownership and cross referencing it with tax records or with addresses.

If it says owned by J Flower Glass, and J flower glass has an address of 111 bowl road philly pa then they are subject to receiving the letter.

Maybe it has something to do with questionable activities in the past, but there is the wonderful service for mail box drops and remailing, mail forwarding which works wonders for hiding your home address.

Brain -> RE: Philly requiring bloggers to pay $300 for 'license'... (8/23/2010 7:20:53 PM)

Don’t pay it and let them hire a collection agency to get the money, I don’t think they legally owe it.

Make them prove they owe it in court.

Well maybe now's the time. You do not have to pay income tax, assert it. When they fuck with us like this it is time to fuck back. Don't tattle on yourself. Yes a blogger can be traced to a certain city, but who said anything about the eleven bucks ?

Fuck all that. They want all the money and at the risk of offending those who don't know how to beat them, they will take you for every dime if they can. It is time for people to just do business and create no paper trail. What do you think I've been doing for the last five years.

You provide the evidence against you. Stop. It really is that simple. You think I'm bold for up and saying this in public ? No, there is no bravery involved, there is just no evidence, NONE. The only thing they got on you is the threat of jail, and to that I say go right ahead. Provide for all my needs for as long as you like. Dry me out, clear my lungs of all tht nicotine and THC. Do it. I'll probably be better off. And then you can also pay for my medical care, cool. The last time I was in the hospital the bill came to $4,029 for seven hours.

Fuck them, if they want money just print it like they always do for their buddies, and quit fucking with us.

We The People need a bit more backbone. I told you about greed, and it comes clearer every day that they will take the last penny out of your pocket if you let them. And this whole thing is ridiculous. Does a fifteen year old kid walking around mowing lawns for ten bucks apiece have to pay three hundred bucks now ?

So then do they collect all the sales taxes off of ebay and amazon.  Philly has a city sales tax.

I did not know they own cyber space.   I just earn $1 today by doing a survey.  Where should I send in my $300?

DCWoody -> RE: Philly requiring bloggers to pay $300 for 'license'... (8/24/2010 1:10:22 PM)

Well that's dumb.....I mean, ya can sorta see where they're coming from....people do run sites that're technically 'just' blogs and make tens of thousands a year.....but someone somewhere should've put in a limit. Personally, I'd move to a city not run by mouthbreathers.

My question is, what in the hell entitles Philadelphia to ANY money from of all things.. (let alone anyone at all..) ...a blogger???

OK...let's see...what will these morons do to suck even more money out of the blogger.

Well....there will need to be a Blogger Exam before you can get your blogging license. There will also of course, be a Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, etc. Blogging License...and each one will require you to complete an exam. The exam will feature a $25.00 application fee.

Then the exam itself will cost $50.00 to take.

Then...well....there will need to be a Blogger Tax.

This will help to pay for all the hacks and no-show workers they will need to oversee the Blogger Exams, Licenses and Taxes.

Then there will be the need to form the Philadlphia Board of Bloggers...because after all, SOMEONE has to test and certify the bloggers. That will need around 300 ignorant employees, to create the long lines at the Blogger License desks.

Oh...wait....a Font Tax!....yes!!!.....anyone using TrueType fonts will have to pay an extra tax.

...and this gem as quoted above...... ""Even though small-time bloggers aren't exactly raking in the dough, the city requires privilege licenses for any business engaged in any "activity for profit," says tax attorney Michael Mandale of Center City law firm Mandale Kaufmann."

Yes sirree...the government is ENTITLED to YOUR money. ...fork it over.

:)
