I'd say public place and instinct. You have to be careful, like don't go alone, carry your cell phone with you, ensure you're meeting a nice, complete human being, etc etc... and if you feel something's wrong, it's always wise to trust your instincts.
It could be wonderful if someone could go with you... and yes, there's always the risk *sad face*

If you want, send me a message and I can help get you, at least, the basics of firearms training - I realize its overkill 99.99% of the time, but its not bad knowledge to have. If I'm not convenient, I can find someone else reliable who will instruct you.

No strings, politics-free basic instruction is a "thing" of mine, and of some of the organizations I belong to.
