Brain -> Der Spiegel: US middle class vanishing (8/23/2010 6:59:21 PM)

So is the Canadian middle class. I think we can lay the demise of the middle class at the feet of Republican leadership starting with Reagan and ending with GW. In Canada it started with Mulroney and will end with Harper.

Der Spiegel: US middle class vanishing

The American middle class is on the verge of disappearing, while the United States, itself, is in danger of becoming a third world country, a leading German newspaper says. According to an article appearing in the German newspaper, Der Spiegel, the negative consequences of the global financial crisis include a widened social class rift and the elimination of the middle class in the US.

The article states that many Americans are beginning to realize that the American Dream has now become a nightmare as people are having to face the bitter reality of a shrinking job market along with decades of stagnating wages and dramatic increases in inequality. More than a year after the official end of the recession, the overall unemployment rate remains consistently above 9.5 percent. But this is just the official figure. When adjusted to include the people who have already given up looking for work -- or are barely surviving on the few hundred dollars they earn with a part-time job and having to use their savings to supplement their income -- the real unemployment figure jumps to more than 17 percent.

In its current annual report, the US Department of Agriculture notes that "food insecurity" is on the rise, and that 50 million Americans were unable to buy enough food to remain healthy at some point last year. One out of every eight American adults and one out of four children now survive on government food stamps. These are unbelievable numbers for the world's richest nation Last week, leading online columnist Arianna Huffington issued the almost apocalyptic warning that “America is in danger of becoming a Third World country.”

In a recent cover story titled “So Long, Middle Class," the New York Post presented its readers with “25 statistics that prove that the middle class is being systematically wiped out of existence in America.”

The hyperbole really shouldn't be necessary.  Yeah, things are sucking around here.  But they're still sucking a lot worse in Zimbabwe.

Things have sucked long enough for me and it’s time to reverse the losses and move in the right direction again or life will continue to get more and more difficult.

They won’t be satisfied until a lot more of us are living in piss poor poverty. What happened with Wall Street rewarded getting all that money for the damage they did should be the last straw.

Trying to get peoples Social Security money like they are now should be a wakeup call.

Brain, those "Free-Trade" deals like "NAFTA" and "CAFTA" are what's causing the middle class to dissapear.
Everytime you "outsource" 100,000 blue collar jobs you also outsource 30,000 to 40,000 white collar jobs with them.
And all for the priviledge of "low prices!" Low prices don't help if you're broke.
We've lost tens of millions of manufacturing jobs right from the git-go after "NAFTA!" Sure, go ahead and blame it on the Republicans but who signed "NAFTA" into law?
This is why I'm out of the stock market, if people can't afford to pay for goods and services profits are going to take a nose dive and the market will go down!

It can not be true the middle class is vanishing. My observations do not support it. It may look this way from Germany.  I live in Vancouver BC. When I drive to US  I see massive suburbs with big houses, two cars, pretty children and dogs. There are no signs they will drop dead tomorrow. Even small towns look wealthy. I always wonder how people in small towns with no signs of any industry make good enough  living to afford the lifestyle.

Free trade really isn't. It never has been. Not even from the early days of our country. It is always regulated in favor of a limited group.

There is more to it than NAFTA, CAFTA, GATT, but those are certainly large contributors.

But I'm pretty certain you  already knew this popeye.
