I have my own feelings about this but I wanted so what other people think about this as a general concept.

To me, the ability to honestly discuss a broken promise with another is more valuable than having conflict over whether expectations are unreasonable.

Do people really have that much trouble completing the task they take on for others?

I enjoy the commitment of it all. I know or at least think that every time I keep a promise..No matter how big or small, I am building that foundation of trust..That's very important to me to be able to do that with the people I let in my life.

There are certain circumstances like a few that have been pointed out that would hinder the keeping of a promise but I keep way more than I have ever broken. The people I'd want to be associated with would take it just as serious.

So yes I expect them to keep their word..Transgressions, depending on the reasons wouldn't necessarily cause an issue unless a pattern began to appear.
