Most of the debate about illegal immigration is about how its "wrong" but not so much about how its harmful.

The debate is rarely about the self defeating nature of current US immigration policies that close the door on people who are ready and prepared to lay down roots in the US.

With all the talk of deflation and lack of economic demand, might not boosting US demand for housing and other items through legal immigration be a good idea?
From what I have seen as an immigration attorney, immigrants are smart with money, know how to spot opportunities, and work hard. If afforded status in the US, they are a force that could really boost up our economy and tax base. Why not tap into it?

Have you read the head lines lately? With this economy, illegal immigration is down. Where are they going to work?

You could lock them all up for sneaking across the border illegally, then use them as slave labour in the prisons? I'm told the American prison system is quite fond of doing that, and obviously any revenue generated by the prison system goes straight back into the evil Federal system...

There is certain type of immigration that works as a stimulus. It is millionaire immigration. In Canada one gets green light to immigrate if they bring in at least 800,000 dollars. There is a similar program in the US. The numbers are small though to make much difference. The rest of immigration during recession helps bring down wages faster than it would happen without it. Immigrants usually have no capital to create businesses and jobs. I just read a headline that looked something like this: "77% jobs are filled by immigrants,  unemployed Brits  prefer to live on public assistance". The article, of course, was a propaganda piece  in support to austerity measures.  It was left out that the jobs offer either below living wage or otherwise humiliating conditions. Similar thing happens in Canada. One can meet almost absurd-looking offers. Like for example asking for university diploma and 2 years experience for close to minimum wage night shift position.  (The last was recently offered by a multinational large corporation [ALS Laboratories].)  In the US many companies and universities favor H1B workers to Americans.

If we want to spark the economy a much better way to do it would be by getting out of those "free-trade" deals like "NAFTA."
Anything we need in this country can and should be made here.

Oh yeah, trade should be the first thing to go in order to aid an economy you economic savant.
