Brain -> Republicans to 9/11 Responders: Die, and Die Quickly - VIDEO (8/25/2010 12:42:52 AM)

From one side of their mouths they rant against building a mosque two blocks from the 9/11 site presumably because of the sanctity of that site at ground zero (ground zero cannot be seen from the proposed mosque nor can one see the mosque from ground zero). From the other side of their mouths they say no for compensation aid to the 9/11 responders who were hurt during that crisis (what, they think the responders are undeserving for their work at that sanctified site?). Blatant hypocrisy.

This clip of Anthony Weiner going ballistic on the House floor is one for the ages -- it should be watched again and again and again, and not only because he was angry and frustrated, but because he spoke a truth that all of us expect from our representatives. It's really quite simple: "If you believe that it's right, you vote yes. You don't hide behind procedure and give cover to your pals."

It's really that simple, but here's the backstory. The House has been trying to re-open the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund through 2031 for 9/11 responders whose health has been affected.

When it became apparent that the Republicans were going to attach "poison pill" amendments to the bill that had nothing to do with 9/11 and everything to do with their political agenda, Democrats shut down the possibility of amending the bill by moving it to the suspension calendar, where a minimum 2/3rds vote is needed for it to pass.

Any politician voting against giving compensation to those injured in 9/11 should be ashamed. Anyone who has worked in construction, especially prior to the eighties, knows the damage to health caused by many of the materials used. I said a while back that sadly, as many will die from breathing in toxic fumes and materials, as died on the day.

Emergency service workers, survivors from inside the building, passers by, all of these are at some degree of risk. All of these deserve compensation.

Personal note- my sister was a highly decorated EMT who worked at Ground Zero for several days following 9/11 with effectively no respiratory equipment. She has since developed multiple chemical sensitivity- a poorly understood illness characterized by extreme sensitivity to common organic compounds such as aldehydes. While she has health coverage through the NY Fire Dept if she goes to an ER with respiratory distress- which has happened numerous times, she has been denied any disability claims.

This is (excuse the pun), a no-brainer to me. Those responders should get the thanks of a grateful nation, not its scorn. But then, when was the last time Republicans actually helped the United States and not lined the pockets of their corporate backers? Should ask that turn the election debates to each Republican and expect a real answer. When they can't muster one, dont vote for them.

Sanity -> RE: Republicans to 9/11 Responders: Die, and Die Quickly - VIDEO (8/25/2010 6:47:52 AM)

The Dems are using the illnesses of the 911 responders for political gain. Dems have the majority in both houses of congress as well as the presidency and could pass this if they wanted to, but the way they presented it is a sham.

Congressman Anthony Weiner Flips Out On House Floor (Video) Topics: Political News and commentaries
Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) pulled a "hot dog" stunt and took to the House floor and threw a temper tantrum against Republicans equivalent to shutting off a video game on a four year old. His anger stemmed from Republican proposed amendments in heavily watered down liberal legislation. (Hat tip - Eye Blast):

After listening to the Fox video it seems clear to me that Peter King makes the most reasoned argument. Weiner is all worked up over Kings objection to the Democrats placement of the $4.7 billion aid legislation for 9/11 responders on the suspension calendar which requires a two-thirds vote to pass - meaning that no amendments could be added. The procedure is usually used to pass non-controversial bills. As pointed out over at The Hill, King defended his objection by saying:
"Anthony can rant and rave all he wants on the House floor, he did not answer one point that I made last night," he said. "I've done everything I possibly can. The fact is this should not be a partisan issue, I have been very, very critical of the Republican Party. "The bottom line is the Democrats control the House and they pulled a procedural gimmick starting ten days ago, and they lost the nerve to bring it to the floor on a real vote," ...
Here's a take home message for Mr. Weiner. Follow House procedures and stop trying to finagle funding for illegal aliens - then you won't have to throw embarrassing temper tantrums on the House floor. And, by the way, the American people deserve to know if the bill requires American taxpayer dollars to be paid to illegal aliens - and we deserve to know in "advance" of its passage.

They don't have two thirds, which is what is needed. Simple up down vote on two thirds.

9/11 families demand GOP stop blocking Commission recommendations
Painfully aware of the avalanche of irrelevant amendments that Republicans have put forth in an attempt to stall or derail the 9/11 Commission recommendations from getting a Senate vote, families of those who died on September 11 have sent a harshly-worded letter to Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), demanding that the GOP put national security before politics.

"As family members who lost loved ones on 9/11, we support full implementation of the 9/11 Commission recommendations. We are writing out of grave concern that your recent introduction of highly provocative, irrelevant amendments will jeopardize the passage of S.4.," said the letter, which was signed by key members of the groups Voices of September 11th and Families of September 11. "It is inconceivable that anyone in good conscience would consider hindering implementation of the 9/11 Commission recommendations, delaying much-needed homeland security improvements. We strongly disagree with these divisive procedural tactics."

The letter was signed by Voices of September 11th President Mary Fetchet who lost her 24-year-old son, Brad, in the New York City attacks and Carol Ashley, whose daughter Janice, 25, died in World Trade Center Tower One. Signing from Families of September 11 were Beverly Eckert, whose husband, Sean Rooney, died in Tower Two and Carie Lemack, whose mother, Judy Larocque, was aboard one of the hijacked flights. "Just as the Iraq war deserves separate debate, so do each of the amendments you offered. S. 4 should be a clean bill and debate should conclude this week with a straight up and down vote. Each day that passes without implementation of the remaining 9/11 Commission recommendations, the safety and security of our nation is at risk," said the letter, which was sent to McConnell on March 8.

"Tactics such as those you are contemplating, which endanger the 9/11 bill, send a signal to America that your priority is partisan politics, not protecting America against terrorism. Both parties must work together to pass this critical legislation. We, the undersigned, understand all too well the risk of failure to secure our nation."

9/11 families also demand that the project 51 Mosque not be built on it's current location...So, which of these demands do we give in to?

mnottertail -> RE: Republicans to 9/11 Responders: Die, and Die Quickly - VIDEO (8/26/2010 10:10:25 AM)

Which ones are that, because I saw a cite on the mosque thread to the contrary.

But thats rather off topic, don't you think?  since you are contravening a reputable cite
in anther thread?

well, no, the topic is the political end of it, and that republicans will not vote for funding for the aftermath to the responders et al for doctoring.

I guess then that there are 9/11ers, some for and some against the building.

Maybe it's because they already have health coverage supplied by their union contracts and employers?

But I guess you feel the government should pay for the health care of everyone, so I'm not surprised that you are angry.

mnottertail -> RE: Republicans to 9/11 Responders: Die, and Die Quickly - VIDEO (8/26/2010 3:15:46 PM)

Maybe it is because some of them don't because they been dropped by insurance, and exceeded their policies and lost their jobs because they can no longer perform them. And I am not angry, why are you so vituperative and anti-american?

brokedickdog -> RE: Republicans to 9/11 Responders: Die, and Die Quickly - VIDEO (8/26/2010 3:34:16 PM)

mnott,

Enthusiastic cheers to you for working in the word "vituperative."

More "debate" from you huh Rob. Your comment about the Mosque was nothing to do with the topic, which is the health costs for first responders. From your post it seems as you are suggesting the government dont have a duty of care to these people. The irony is if Obama had said much the same, you would have been on your high horse moaning about what a bad American he was.

You mean any illegal aliens involved in this disaster relief should not be compensated ? How about a nice cheap citizenship ? Would that make you happy ?

Anybody who in most any way dealt with those towers in relief of the victims and suffered as a result...deserves compensation in some form.

The minority party has certain parilmentary rights as does the majority, if you suggest this is somehow different than when the repubs had the majority...you would be correct. The dems were never even heard from. Hell, the repubs from 00-06 practically told the dems, they didn't even need...to show up.

Sanity -> RE: Republicans to 9/11 Responders: Die, and Die Quickly - VIDEO (8/27/2010 4:05:42 AM)

Talk about a total non sequitur! Theres a complete disconnect between your post and mine, yours doesnt follow what I wrote in any meaningful way whatsoever.

Its a total strawman, and thats being kind.
