Toppingfrmbottom -> how come bad smells can come and go in their ability to be smelled? (8/25/2010 3:48:35 PM)

One time we had a dead rat behind some book cases, and it'd stink really bad for 5-10 minutes constantly an then perhaps in another 10 - 20 minutes you couldn't smell it at all, and then through out the day you'd go through it becoming noticeable, an the not noticeable, then noticeable, then not noticeable.

It's the weirdest thing, you'd think dead rotting mouse would stink constantly, not switch between now it smells and now it don't.

One nostril's ability to detect smells gets exhausted, so it plugs itself and shuts down to recover, and the other takes over: most people don't have both nostrils completely clear at the same time, just for this cycling reason.
Nifty, eh?

Tantriqu, yes that is nifty.

So that's why on and off through out the day I can't smell the rotten smell and then all of a sudden it's there, then it's not?

I thought maybe it had to do with the fact that it was a tiny bit cooler when I couldn't smell it, and maybe it had heated up a bit not noticeable enough to feel, but noticeable enough to make the stink stir up.

Are you sure about that..Cycling of the nostrils is caused by the brains activities at any given time. Left nostril open.right brain predominately active based on the tasks at hand.

As a matter of fact I can explain how to control that.[:D]

Nothing to do with brain cycling other than body position.

There's more out on it if you care to look. It's really fascinating. I wasn't joking about that trick to change hemispheres..I've done it.

Years ago I did a good bit of reading about subjects like this but for the life of me..I can't remember the names of the books anymore.

What your probably experiencing is simply your brain getting used to the "smells" in your environment. The fact that it keeps coming and going may be due to the degree of saturation at any given moment which could be caused by "airflow patterns" in your home. I have never gotten used to a smell like your talking about though..rotting animals, skunk scent or strong scents like that..maybe they diminish but I'm certainly aware of them.

Not everyone's dead rat collection is stinky!  What about all those little dead rats, dead armadillos and dead alligators in funny poses?
