i just filed a sexual harassment complaint against one of my supervisors, which means that my hours have been cut. In anticipation of needing another job soon, i was going to go to these two open interviews today. But they're out of town (40 miles), and i don't have a car. So i said, what the fuck, i will bike it. No problem. i've done it before.

It was fucking 110 degrees today! i didn't know it was going to be that hot when i left because my computer just crashed, which also meant i didn't have any map of these two freak-ass rural towns. So, basically, i got lost several times.

i had a 2 liter bottle of water with me, but i emptied it within the first hours. After that i was refilling it from the hoses on people's lawns. It was a 4 hour bike ride, before i got lost.

Anyway, i missed both the job fairs, but i don't think it matters because there was a massive power out in the area because of the heat. Then i had to bike back. (i tried to call several people for a ride, but they didn't answer.)

ALL IN ALL:
around 100 miles round trip by bike
about 2 gallons of water consumed
64 oz Dr. Pepper
2 Red bulls
2 cans Guava nectar
1 nap in a plum orchard
10 mosquito bites
1 moderate sunburn (i kept putting on the sunscreen and then sweating it off)
1 very good night's sleep ahead of me

Din, first of all....oh my aching bones!  Just reading about your adventure!

Second, cutting your hours in response to your complaint is called retribution......I haven't checked to see what country you're in, but where I'm from, that's illegal also. I'd follow up on that too......

Good for you for having the cajones to file a complaint.  I know it's not easy to stand by your convictions..... good luck!

At that point, it is time to consult with a lawyer.
They will sue and their fee will come out of whatever settlement you will get.

Unlawful reduction in hours is a civil action complaint in most jurisdictions. Consult a worker's rights attorney and see if they have a free initial consultation. Sometimes things are not as cut and dry as they seem, but an attorney in your area can tell you best. Keep copious notes with dates, times, and the people who were around and who you talked to. It's all in the details.

Best of luck.

I'd be lucky if I could bike 1 mile now. That's amazing in itself. Take a beautiful bath, and rest, thats a big toll not only did you have an emotional day, but 100 miles! Holy shit! Have a calgon evening

i brought a change of clothes for the interview.

i talked to a lawyer and he told me there's nothing i can do about them reducing my hours. Legally, an an wage employee has no "right" to a certain number of hours, and they are claiming that it had nothing to do with the complaint.

i am documenting the stuff that happens at work, but there's little else i can do about it for now.

Thanks to everybody. By the way, i really needed to get off my ass and start excercising anyway, so this might have been a good kick in the ass.

If you can bike 100 miles in the heat, I'd say you have been exercising quite well. Harassment complaints are no fun. I once griped at a coworker about not carrying her share of the load in the lab, didnt think much of it and next thing I knew, I was in one boss's office looking at a harassment complaint (she was fucking the other boss who was married by the way). It got interesting.
