2) Archives
3) Difficult to learn
4) Story

Quick and silly guess:  Archived films of hula dancers (Hula dances tell stories and is difficult to learn.) wearing purple and white seashells.

No not pearls. Very close but not the actual pearl. It is the way the non-Hawaiians express, archive and disperse pearls of wisdom, messages, and sacredness.

Need another clue? How about the second word after "Story" is "Belt".

poise -> RE: Common Denominator (9/4/2010 12:28:58 PM)

Its a purple and white shell. Non-Hawaiins use this shell around their belt to tell a story?

Okay I am caving and giving the answer!

It is wampum, the quahog shell that Iroquois and some other Indian tribes, like the Algonquins, made beads out of.

They wove the purple and white beads (which were difficult to learn to make but once someone had it they could pump out 10 ft of wampum a day) into Story Belts which were one way of archiving their History, treaties, among many other things they used wampum for .

Wampum was an important part to Iroquois life. Once again the white man came along and effed it up mass producing wampum and then regulating it, using it as currency, which the Indian people did not use it for. The Europeans saw the value of wampum to the Indians and kept the gold coins in their pockets for trade elsewhere and made and used wampum instead.
a bit about wampum

poise, I hereby present you with an imaginary wampum belt that nominates you for the next set of clues!
