ORIGINAL: Tantriqu The English language, English authors and poets, anti-slavery and childhood labour, and pro-education legislation, protestantism, Terry Pratchett's theory that your lousy weather made you a nation of inventors, ancestors, professors and explorers, and Submissive alpha men! Thanks! That's a good post....I like that...but a couple of points all the same..... England isn't really a Protestant country......a falling out with the Pope over a divorce isn't the same as a Reformation.... Yep, C of E was protestant enough for the thousands who died in religious wars during Bloody Mary and Elizabeth's reigns, for the Civil War and Old Ironsides, and for catholics prevented from holding higher office until late in the last century. Of course, Henry VIII's hankering for a 'legitimate' son and church land was the excuse, but the hell of a catalyst, helping to propel England decades ahead in science and civil rights (except freedom of religion ;-) ). Check out Kingsley Amis' 'The Alteration' for the alternate history of a protestant-less Britain. And hurray for my beloved Brit subbies, one Welsh, one Scottish, and their accents, and I see I missed another favourite thing or three about Brits: Devonshire cream, free museums, and that they LOVE Canadians!
