I was just wondering after a few pints of real ale, I.K.B to be precise,how many, I am unsure, but seeing as Britain is sort of allied to the US through history and present circumstance, I was wondering if Britons liked their allie ( unsure of the correct spelling). To Britons, what do you like about the Americans ? Further to that, what comes from America that you admire, or could not do without product wise ? I will start on this, firstly Zippo lighters, simple and reliable, Sheaffer fountain pens circa 1950's;technologically advanced and superb writers. Leatherman, Maglite , MSR camping equipment, Harley Davidson and Nalgene spring automatically to mind.

Well....where do I start..... I wouldn't go into like or dislike as it's difficult to say when you don't know a great deal about the country..... So....all comments are couched in the terms of what I have seen on this board and a few other things along the way...... To me...they seem to be a people of extremes.....in the politics section they're either happy to shoulder the blame for everything that's ever happened in the world....even before their inception as a country and people....or they will jump through hoops to blame everyone else and defend themselves into a frenzy.....there doesn't appear to be much perspective....you know..."well we're all right...we do some things quite well and there's room for improvement here and there...." For a people who espouse the virtues of individualism.....the thing that stands out most for me is the extent to which posters love belonging to the group.....some would argue no bad thing considering the alternative.....but in my view...from what I've seen here....this is an area where the English and Americans are markedly different..... When you say 'superb writers'.....I would say that Americans write better English than the English.....in terms of grammar...sentence structure etc.....but the English are more creative with language....and in my view more creative as a people.....the English way is to be different.....the American way appears to be conform to the group.....and perhaps this is due to our respective political systems....the Americans have a nailed down constitution...lots of rules and regulations...which is useful in that you know where you stand and therefore know your 'rights'....our system is an unwritten constitution which allows you room for flexibility.....and confusion by the way.....so take your pick in terms of which is better....both have strengths and weaknesses in my view..... Following on from this....I think our strength is in generating ideas......and their strength is in commitment to the job.....they seem to be more disciplined than the English (unless of course things on this board aren't what they seem)....in general.....which lends toward being good at getting a job done......and I think that's something from which the English can learn..... They also seem to place a premium on courtesy....and in this there's not much room for piss taking....the English and Aussies are very similar in this respect in that piss taking is part and parcel of a conversation and at the end of the conversation there's no bad feeling...just an accepted part of relationship building.....the Americans seem to differ here.... On writing.....when I was at school some of the best books and most informative books I read were American.....and when I moved onto college we had to read Chaucer...Shakespeare and all that bollocks written in a language that no one understands nor cares about.....fundamentally impenetrable...like a South American rain forest......and those American books were far..far....more conducive to learning....so credit where it's due for writing something that actually means something in the modern world....a touch unkind to English writers....as Lord of the Flies is a fantastic book for a lad growing up learning about the world....perhaps the issues were our teachers and the curriculum.... So....in sum....the things that have most impressed me are some of the books I read as a young lad.....and their most prominent export....soul music.....oh and they've produced some great films down the years.....some shite mind too.....but when they've got it right some fantastic films that say a lot about the world and they're ideas that stay with you.....

Music. Specifically Born in the USA springs to mind...that's hell of a song. How easy it is to talk their womenfolk out of their clothes. Product wise, I find McDonalds tasty (people always look at me weird when I say it though).

Most of the replies to this, I suppose, will mostly mention cultural products: books, films, music, etc. For me it's the writers, notably most Raymond Chandler; Big Sleep et al. Music: ZZ Top, Madonna and some others that elude me at this point in time.

I shared the halls of residence and some college courses with a bunch of American students from Sacramento, California, when I was studying for my degree and found them to be pretty much like anyone else apart from their odd accents, idiosyncratic spelling and weird misuse of common English words. I liked them a lot. We used to hang out and smoke a lot of weed and talk shit. I look back on those days with considerable fondness. Americans are no different from the rest of us. A bit richer on average maybe, but generally there is good and bad in them the same as everybody else. America, though, well, that's a different story. I really wouldn't want to live there.

1. Their date system because saying August the 30th 2010 is so much better than saying 30th of August 2010. 2. Their positive outlook...cos they ain't called Americants 3. The fact some of them wear hats 4. Their spurious use of YouTube to document how to fit car radios 5. Their charitable and giving nature 6. Their perfect teeth 7. humm I will get to ten no matter how long it takes 8. No I won't Although having said that my experience of American's is largely limited to those that appear on TV and the internet and we all know how accurate those institutions are.

Oh yes, got to mention the cars, late sixties to late seventies muscle cars, Camaro, Trans Am, Charger, Mustang, such styling modern cars come nowhere near.

pancakes with maple syrup. Although the 4 months I lived in the US I put on 14lbs as a result (oops!) Cheerful sales assistants The bartender in my hotel who made killer cocktails clam chowder - the creamy version. The lower cost of clothes. Their easy acceptance of Brits as all being good people.

I think only two cars tried the American muscle car thing over here in Blighty, the Ford Cortina Mk3 and the first generation Toyota Celica ST, the looks were good, but muscle they weren't. The latter, the Toyota Celica ST was the first car I was after, but I could not find any that did not require extensive welding due to tin worm.
