Seems BP is doing some back-peddling of its own.

http://www.pnj.com/article/20100829/NEWS01/8290333/BP-reverses-admits-there-s-oil-in-local-waters

Despite persistent denials from BP last week, thousands of pounds of weathered oil is being pulled from under the surface of Pensacola Bay every day........

During more than a dozen interviews last week, BP officials and spokespeople for a number of government agencies working on the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill response denied knowledge of oil in the bay.Even as they spoke, however, Escambia County officials and local fishermen were reporting finding weathered oil, as they've been doing for weeks. BP's own crews were hand-scooping it up, and a submerged-oil team from BP's Deepwater Horizon Response Incident Command Post in Mobile was investigating.

On Saturday, Scott Piggott, who heads the Escambia and Santa Rosa cleanup operation for BP, said cleanup workers began noticing the submerged oil at Barrancas Beach in July.

• On Wednesday, BP reported cleaning up 3,776 pounds of weathered oil from water near NAS.• On Thursday, it reported collecting 2,207 pounds from water near NAS.• The reports say oil was not recovered from water near Fort Pickens on those two days, though 3,255 pounds were collected from the Fort Pickens beach on Wednesday and 2,123 pounds was collected the next day.• Piggott said 1,000 pounds were collected from underwater one day last week near Fort Pickens.

They also pointed out BP workers wading out in chest-deep water and hand-scooping oily matter from underneath the sand at Barrancas Beach.

The two fishermen easily found an abundance of large tar mats and tar balls of various sizes submerged under thin and thick layers of sand. When they randomly jumped into two to three feet of water in Pensacola Bay near Fort Pickens, Fort McRee and NAS and scooped up sand, they nearly always turned up some form of oily material.

They said they're not confident all the oil will be cleaned up.  "It's going to be messed up around here for awhile," one said.

"BP is really counting on that out-of-sight, out-of-mind thing. It's there and they know it," he said. "They need to be exposed and made to do something about it."

These are only a very few snip-its from the story.  The whole read is rather informative.

Course...some people think its all a conspiracy and being made up.

Oh, there's still definitely oil out there. My twin lives on Mobile Bay in Alabama, and there's still oil out there, too. There is much improvement, but we are by no means out of the woods yet. Even if (or when) cleanup is "complete," those economies may not be able to recover.

Sorry Yumme, I understand that its not gone, please dont take my post as anything more than tongue in cheek sarcasm, because we have a person here who says its not a problem anymore. I am in no way putting down the problems this oil spill has, and will continue to impact people, animals and area for a long time to come

Yheyre still finding shore bound oil from the Exxon Valdese and that was how long ago? Why am I not surprised. Maybe another of BP's 'pet scientists" can find another superbug that is eating shore bound oil.

Ya know, those guys that used to work for Phillip Morris?

I understood you, Lucy. <3 I responded to this thread because in the other thread, I am encouraging people to eat seafood fished from the open grounds here where contamination is not being found. I don't want it to seem like I am saying "Nothing to see here, folks, everything's fine." so wanted to acknowledge that there is still much work to be done and it will likely never all get done. I just quoted your post cause it was the one that sparked me.

Wow, I'd not heard of that one, Ven.  I drove by there a lot but it looks like it was really low on the "state news" radar at the Union-Tribune.

Yeah, Avila Beach is a small community, only about 8,000 people. Unocal made a huge mess that took years to clean up. The local PG&E nuclear power plant, Diablo Canyon, is also located there. But that's another story...

Yea, no shit. Didn't they beam it all into space or something, I could've sworn I read somewhere that it was all gone.

I do find the use of the word "scientists" in this context objectionable. "Researchers" would be better, IMO. They're probably engineers, anyway (no offense, thorny).

True Scientists are as delighted to have their hypotheses disproven as proven. Then one knows what is NOT true.

Thus My use of "pet scientist". When I was in grad school, that was one of the first things they drilled thru our heads. You never prove ANYTHING. You only disprove all possible alternatives.

I came up with one that as far as I know is still on the wall of the Biology dept at FIU. "Beware the 'pet hypothesis' cause it'll turn on you and bite you on the ass"

Heres a suggestion...at the bottom of the page, there is a section called "about us" it gives you details of who runs/owns/publishes the web page.
could you be any more dense?
