Don't even provide the excuse for the hijack, Wilbur. Trust me, Ken would far rather hammer all night on his inability (or pretense of such) to comprehend my liberties with language than he would discuss the subject at hand. I think he would have made an excellent Stalinist.

typo edit

Democrat, Democratic.
Global warming, climate change.

Democrat is a noun

Democratic is the adjective form.

Don't you get tired of being wrong all the time?

He's not wrong. You are. Use of the adjectival form is not required. Compound nouns can take the form noun+noun. "Democrat control" conveys control by Democrats. "Democratic control" conveys control by the Democratic Party. Either is correct. Your reason for objecting (which I read) has nothing to do with grammar, and would benefit from you dropping that boring pretense.

K.

DomKen -> RE: Does President Obama want to lose the House? (8/30/2010 12:11:01 AM)

No. It is based in grammar as well as the simple fact that it is and has been since the 1790's the Democratic Party.

Heretic is getting called on this because of his many whines about how people referred to GWB. Since he demands respect he has to give respect as well.

. Unlike Latin, English is a living language.

Your own link defines the usage as acceptable:

"Some believe that the use of the noun "Democrat" as an adjective is ungrammatical.[28] Using a noun as a modifier of another noun is not grammatically incorrect in modern English in the formation of a compound noun, i.e. "shoe store," "school bus," "peace movement," "Senate election," etc. Americans commonly speak of "the Iraq war" rather than "the Iraqi war.""

Now that the shitty little conniption fit has been addressed, I do, however, agree with you that we should wait until the elections are over before discussing the outcome.

MrRodgers -> RE: Does President Obama want to lose the House? (8/30/2010 7:08:29 AM)

Last poll I saw had the dems in congress at 32% approval and the repubs at a rousing 27% approval.

I am sure that Obama is not shaking in his boots and rather a large no. of repub incumbents are in trouble and have been defeated by the more radical of the right in recent primaries. Whether or not they have a particular agenda that may or may not take hold...the number and situation is so fluid...NO prediction has any value at all.

There is as much chance the repubs will lose seats. In addition...IF Obama is over his head which of course he isn't especially compared to Bush, than by these new standards 3 of the last 4...drowned. (repubs all)

TheHeretic -> RE: Does President Obama want to lose the House? (8/30/2010 7:09:13 AM)

Why do you tell such stupid lies, Ken? The standard I asked for, but rarely saw exercised, was a simple bit of respect towards the office of the Presidency, instead of the barrage of hate speech we saw at every turn for eight years. It isn't hard. It doesn't interfere in any way with offering criticism, and it doesn't preclude using language in such a way as to distinguish between the principle of democracy, and the political party which has co-opted the term.

Ever go to the horse or dog track, Strange? Do the announcers just wait silently until the end of the race to talk about how it is going? The campaign is rolling, the commenting light is lit.

I know the talk is circulating. Personally, I want at least the House or the Senate to go Republican. It's not because I am one, but more so because one party owning two of the three branches of government is rarely a good thing in my mind. Honestly, it's more like 3 of the 4 branches of government given that legislation must pass both House and Senate to become law. It becomes too easy to ram agendas down the throats of everyone else and short circuits any need for compromise when that much power resides in so few hands - especially when it those hands are grouped under one ideology .

Having said that, I'm at the point where I wonder if compromise is a word destined for the trash bin of political history.

I think for a good many independents, it will boil down not to who governs best, but who threatens least. Democrats could help their cause by recognizing and castrating the hypocrisy in their own folds. Since that is not going to happen, I'm with you on thinking there will be a significant turn over in Washington come November.

I've just never been one to spend a lot of time worrying about what might happen until the happening is done and we see what type of playing field we have.

I do enjoy reading the speculation though. Grin.

If your spell check confirms "strategerey" and "refudiate" as real words, get a new spell check.

Hey willbeur you apparently do not get that I was not the originator of those two words and was commenting on some one else using them. That is to say "propagating" their use.  Quite the literalist aren't we willbeur.

Maybe you should try to keep track of things a little more, or at least use that handy, dandy search feature on your computer more often.
