Some people on the left apparently believe that a selectively edited YouTube clip of Democrats talking is balanced news...

Theres a word for that, too -  "Gullible".

This story is from June and July.

Inhofe (R-OK) and DeMint both blocked attempts at a unanimous consent vote, then the GOP leadership, apparently trying to do damage control, said they had no objections.

But despite the lip service from the GOP the bill was sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee where it seems to have languished since.

Senate GOP will lift block on subpoena power ...

Sanity is correct to be suspicious (it had to happen sometime). This appears to be a case of skillful political manouvering on the part of the dems, they gave the impression of trying to rush the bill through the Senate when the Republicans weren't present (fuck knows where they were, this is beyond my knowledge of the american system).

The few Republicans who were there found this highly suspicious, and objected.....note, they didn't actually object to the content of the bill, but to having it read or voted on....

Yes, those were the objections, that the bill was being rushed through and they didn't have time to read it.

The same strategy Republicans have been using on every piece of legislation, claim it's being rushed and that no one knows what's in it.

The only problem is that this was a straightforward, simple bill that can be read in just a few minutes and contains no real points to debate other than whether the Senator agrees or disagrees with granting the subpeona power.

Here's the link to it:

Sounds like I was pretty close.....what I don't get though....if they were worried enough about what might be in it to delay it....why weren't they there to hear it read in the first place?

mnottertail -> RE: BP Investigation Blocked By Senate (8/30/2010 8:57:55 AM)

Perhaps they were standing by their closets, to see who would pop out now.

Typically, 90+ percent of the time, your senator or representative is NOT in the chamber when things are being read.  Most of the speeches you see on CSpan are to an empty or nearly empty house.  Why you ask?  Practicality.  A congressman cant get much work done if he is sitting in the audience listening to someone drone on about why the highway budget needs to have $100,000 added so that his district can work to eradicate the purple spotted cane toad as their mating season caused an accident last march.  They sit in their office and basically watch CSpan like the rest of us while they craft their OWN earmarks for sayyyyyyy a bridge to an island with 3 people on it to stimulate the economy with construction jobs.

Isn't that their job, or do Congressmen have some additional role? (I'm a Brit)

Hillwilliam -> RE: BP Investigation Blocked By Senate (8/30/2010 9:24:23 AM)

What I meant is that if they spend all their time listening to others drone on, they will have no time to get work done in their own office crafting legislation, answering questions from constituents, etc.  Sorry for the lack of clarity.  I guess I was concentrating more on the satire of the moment.

Do that and you get no news results, as I pointed out already.

I did that to try and find some info, and like you say, there wasnt any. The video is clear enough about the Republicans blocking the investigation. As you say, it would be nice to know the background.

This footage is included in the video....but what isn't is that later on, when the republicans got back from wherever the fuck they were and actually read the thing, they gave it their backing.

tl;dr - story is bullshit, don't believe youtube vids ffs.

joether -> RE: BP Investigation Blocked By Senate (8/30/2010 1:00:08 PM)

420 to 1? I guess there were a bunch of Republicans in The House, that had time to read the bill. What is the excuse of those Republicans in the Senate?

No, this issue, is all about the election. The Republicans want to stave off anything, until they control Congress (which is a fantasy). Why would Republicans want to really investigate a industry that supllies their warchests with millions every years? They want to be in power, then vote 'yes' on a bill that amounts to a 'hand slap' for BP. The irony to this is, the number of people in the Gulf States, who will vote Republican to 'get even with Obama'; even though Mr. Obama has done much more for the Gulf States then the GOP in the last few months.

If the media was REALLY as liberal as conservatives say, shouldn't this have been news back in late June or mid July at the latest?

As this is really the first I'm hearing about it. And I do try to keep up with whats going on in Washington, D.C.

I got news for ya joether.  Big oil greases palms on the Dem side of the aisle as well.  Maybe not to the extent that they donate to the Republicans but they do.  It's called hedging your bets.

Your absolutely correct. However, the number and amount going in to Republican warchests, is quite greater. If the Democrats what an investigation, even though it might cost them 'donations' from the oil industry, to investigate the oil industry; isn't that like say 'not taking bribes from the special interests'? Part of the job of us citizens, is to keep things accountible, accurate, and honest. In this case, a real investigation in to the cause and actions, should be studied, or lease, we Americans risk repeating history.

It is greater for the GOP now because of the direction Obama has taken is so destructive to business. For the POTUS election is was nearly equal.
