I bet you and Lucy were both prefects at school.

I don't know where you get these impressions of me from. I was a *nightmare* at school...

They send you a form when you register for student health, is all.

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: A request (8/31/2010 11:25:03 AM)

Well, a few things. First, my children and family know my wishes. I'm perferctly fine with my organs going to those who need them. Second, I'm not sure - because of my auto-immune disease - if I qualify as a donor, but even so, if they can be used to research Auto-Immune diseases, all the better. Third, I haven't formally filled anything out because I don't want anyone coming around to harvest my organs until it is certain I'm done using them.

To Remember Me - I will live forever

Robert N. Test

  The day will come when my body will lie upon a white sheet neatly tucked under four corners of a mattress located in a hospital; busily occupied with the living and the dying. At a certain moment a doctor will determine that my brain has ceased to function and that, for all intents and purposes, my life has stopped.  When that happens, do not attempt to instill artificial life into my body by the use of a machine. And don't call this my deathbed. Let it be called the bed of life, and let my body be taken from it to help others lead fuller lives.
    Give my sight to the man who has never seen a sunrise, a baby's face or love in the eyes of a woman.

    Give my heart to a person whose own heart has caused nothing but endless days of pain.

    Give my blood to the teenager who was pulled from the wreckage of his car, so that he might live to see his grandchildren play.

    Give my kidneys to the one who depends on a machine to exist from week to week.

    Take my bones, every muscle, every fiber and nerve in my body and find a way to make a crippled child walk.

    Explore every corner of my brain.

    Take my cells, if necessary, and let them grow so that, someday a speechless boy will shout at the crack of a bat and a deaf girl will hear the sound of rain agianst her window.

    Burn what is left of me and scatter the ashes to the winds to help the flowers grow.

    If you must bury something, let it be my faults, my weakness and all prejudice against my fellow man.

    Give my sins to the devil.

    Give my soul to God.
If, by chance, you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you. If you do all I have asked, I will live forever.

Not only organs are donated.  Medical devices may be harvested at the same time.  My late husband didn't have much that was usable except for his corneas and his implanted defibrillator.  The defibrillator can't be used in the US, however, other countries can and do allow for used equipment such as defibrillators and pacemakers.  I was told the defibrillator can be used in countries such as Canada or Mexico or where they are needed the most.  Since the defibrillator cost about $32,000 and he lived for only a year after he got it, it was a valuable donation in itself.

I am very grateful for organ donations.  Gary (vagabonddom) received one new lung 9 years ago. At the time single lung transplants were normal due to the scarcity of donated lungs.  Without that donation we would have never met or had such a wonderful fun life for the past 5 years.  Also, someone who used to post on the forums a lot, snappykappy, received a double lung transplant in the past year.

Keep your peepers off my liver.

Lucylastic -> RE: A request (8/31/2010 3:31:00 PM)

I know we drifted from the OP and for that I apologise even tho I enjoyed it, but I have to add hugs and support to Ken  and anyone else who needs any kind of transplant.
I have had a donor card since I was 18 also, and my kids and all family know that if anything of mine is useful when im done with it , to pass it on. I drilled it into my kids and two have got their licenses and signed the appropo section to do the same.
I have their permission as their next of kin to donate if it ever comes to it.

Hillwilliam -> RE: A request (8/31/2010 4:02:22 PM)

For some reason, reading this thread, I get a flashback to Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life" where they came to the guy's door demanding his liver because he had signed a liver donor card.

DomKen -> RE: A request (8/31/2010 5:07:06 PM)

Thanks everyone.

I guess I do owe everyone an explanation. Last winter I got very sick with a very high temp. After a lot of tests it was found to be an infection in my kidney. While the doctors were able to cure the infection the damage was severe. My kidney function has been declining steadily all year. According to the nephrologist complete failure is inevitable. So I'm looking at dialysis and, with no close relative being a good tissue match, the transplant waiting list. I'm in no immediate danger of dying, or at least so I'm told.

SorceressJ -> RE: A request (8/31/2010 5:18:37 PM)

Ken, I don't really know you, but you're in my thoughts. Do what you have to do for you, and please find a way to let us know how you're coming along.
I am a registered organ donor and so is my Husband.

SubPet715 -> RE: A request (8/31/2010 5:20:28 PM)

Well i'm an organ donor but if this is a matter of kidneys couldn't someone just donate one?
