Capitalism puts profit ahead of everything else and there is no second priority. Under such a system people suffer because higher profit is demanded.

Since all economic systems have their weaknesses why should we blindly follow capitalism? Why can't we switch to a system that puts people ahead of profits?

Capitalism will make you sick

PERVERSE PRIORITIES ARE UNDERMINING DEMOCRACY AND DESTROYING OUR SENSE OF HUMANITY AND COMMUNITY...

While the recent recall of more than a half billion eggs, in the wake of some 1,470 Salmonella infections, has triggered a renewed focus on the dangers posed by factory farms to human health and to the environment (see videos below), the discussion stops short because factory farms are but one symptom of the deadly consequences of a perverse ideology whose sole purpose is to expand the already obscene wealth of less than 1% of the population at the expense of a healthy economy, community, the environment, peace and the very ability of our planet to sustain life...

The richest 2% own more than half the household wealth in the world. The richest 10% hold 85% of total global assets and the bottom half of humanity owns less than 1% of the wealth in the world. The three richest men in the world have more money than the poorest 48 countries. It is the Koch brothers who, like their John Birch Society father before them, have poisoned the nation's discourse by covertly funding the pseudo grass-roots "Tea Party" movement, whose uninformed followers simply do not realize that theirs is an anti-democratic, anti-egalitarian agenda that is intended to solidify corporate wealth and power at their own expense.

The goal of billionaire sociopaths, like the Koch brothers, Richard Mellon Scaife and Rupert Murdoch, is a plutocracy; that is, government of, for and by the wealthy --- a government which masquerades as a democracy…

Corporate crime pays

But when you add health care insurance, farming, outsourced manufacturing, the military-industrial complex, a brutal corporate empire, and coal, uranium and oil extraction to the Wall Street/politician mix, what you find is a potentially deadly crimino-pathogenic environment all flowing from a twisted plutocratic philosophy that elevates the riches of the wealthy few above the health and very lives of the great bulk of humanity. 53 year old Philippe Padieu of Frisco, Texas was sentenced to 45 years in prison after he was convicted on six counts of having unprotected sex with women without informing them that he was HIV positive. Yet, when allegations surface that thousands of Americans have been knowingly infected by deadly bacteria and viruses (including E-coli, salmonella, MRSA, swine and bird flu & bovine spongiform encephalopathy aka "mad cow disease") as a result of the filthy conditions of and methods applied by factory farms, as depicted in Food, Inc. (see trailer below), the corporate titans at the base of the factory food chain, at most, face fines that can be written off as part of the cost of doing business.

Age of absurdity

The corporate message is that a Medicare-for-all system that cuts out the unnecessary parasites (health insurance companies, their CEOs and Wall Street investors) is bad and that a system that puts profits before people is good --- a message which succeeds not because of its intrinsic truth but because 95% of what Americans see, hear and read comes from either hard-right ideologues or from a corporate-owned media. Both have worked in tandem to convince the victims of toxic capitalism that democratic socialism, an equitable economic system which stresses our common, humanitarian interests and public co-responsibilities to one-another and to a sustainable planet is evil and that unregulated monopoly capitalism, which, while cloaked by the myth of a "free-market," sacrifices all to the unbridled greed of the privileged few is good.

http://www.bradblog.com/?p=8002#more-8002

Over the past month, this one source of toxic waste merged with another, making it difficult to determine precisely how much of a 7,722 square mile "dead zone" in the Gulf of Mexico (slightly smaller than New Jersey) is due to agricultural run off and how much is due to another egregious corporate crime, the deadly BP Deep Water Horizon explosion.

I have it on very good authority that Capitalism is alive and well in Canada.
You just had a  salmonella outbreak in Canada this summer. from headcheese.
Fresh Express in Canada had a recall for E coli this summer.
And let us not forget..... Mad Cow Disease. And SARS.
Yep, it's those dirty Canadian Capitalists infecting their neighbors to the south.

We seem to be doing reasonably well with a mixed economy in Canada notwithstanding the events you mentioned. It’s very important the conservative era in Canada end soon and thankfully there is no sign the Regressive Conservatives under Prime Minister Harpo have any chance to win a majority government. With a majority government the conservatives in Canada would do much harm like Bush did to America.

Harpo and his reactionary goons have made modest efforts recently to go backwards in time changing the census so it will be of little use in maintaining a fair and equitable society. And the usual conservative get tough on crime crap, cutting taxes and some changes to pay equity that hurt women, but nothing that can’t be fixed when the Tories are voted out. That article says much however about the problems in the American system for which you did not respond and it appears you prefer to distract away from.

Capitalism is not a political party, it's a form of economy. No matter what political party has the majority in the US or in Canada, both are capitilist countries. So by your own article Canada is also making people sick.

The article is ridiculous, to me. More precisely the conclusion < capitalism causes sickness > is ludicrous.

Capitalism is obviously not a political party but whether it is or not is irrelevant to the opinion of the author.

You still don’t have good healthcare in America because of capitalism, Canadian healthcare is better as Canadians live longer at 1/3 to 1/2 the cost, so capitalism makes Americans ill and worse off relative to Canadians in healthcare; this is only one example.

What’s ridiculous is your blindness to the lower standard of living American citizens as a whole live because of capitalism in comparison to other western countries.

And Canada still have piss poor treatment facilities and technology. What's your point? You're trying to state causation with statistics. It does NOT work that way. Get educated - I recommend a stats 101.

You know, I actually don’t care because it serves those numb skulls in the Whitehouse right because they just don’t get it. One of them said something like “What did they expect? That we were going to give them the same healthcare as in Canada?” Well ya, dumbass! It’s one third to one half the cost and they live longer. THAT IS what people wanted! That’s why you were elected! Maybe if they did what people wanted and not what the corporations want they would get re-elected in November but it’s too late now. Too bad Americans don’t elect progressives to get the real change they want but if they want to cut off their noses to spite their face it’s their choice.

Oh sure, Canada is pretty good for the standard stuff. But where do Canadians go when it's non-standard? It's also sad that despite that 89% you forgot one of the basic tenants - correlation does not imply causation. You also post news articles as if they are a leg to stand on...

I think America can learn a few thing's from our neighbor's to the North.Canada may not be perfect but that have had the healthy balance of captialism mixed in with descent human service's for their population.I do believe Obama and the Democrat's have done the right thing. Our country will be better off when Obama leave's the white house, whether it is in 2013 or 2017.I don't agree with everything Obama has done, but we really did need a progressive president after the failed plan's brought by the Republican's.The healthcare plan Obama signed isn't perfect but it's a start. It can alway's be tweaked in the future. The biggest goal was to get the ball rolling on some form of universal healthcare.

The US murder rate is triple the Canadian murder rate. Certainly nothing to be proud of, however, I suspect that those deaths are factored into the mortality rates of both countries. If we are killing our own at 3 times the rate of Canadians, of course our survival rate is going to be shorter.

ETA: I clicked Ok before I was finished: Suicide and accidents are also factored into survival rates. Since the US has 9.2 times the population of Canada, it makes perfect sense that our suicide and accident rate would be significantly higher. Hence skewing the " statistics "

I say we should do as Obama's science czar Holder says and de-industeralize America. stop those evil corprationd from trying to kill us.
forget that we have the hightst standard of living in the world, that just grossely unfair. forget that no one ever got a job from a poor man, just make sure the rich that do create jobs are brought down. forget that everyone who has retirement funds have those funds invested in the corprations,(the corprations make money you make money) the government will take care of us, they only have our best intrest at heart. forget that even if you took all the money that top ten precent has, you still could not fund the spending the progressives plan. forget capitalism, we can just let the govermenttake over the whole shabang, let them give us jobs, loans for our houses and education and healthcare.
then it will be like that song, you load 16tons and what do you get, another day older and deeper in debt, st. peter don't call me cos I can't go I owe my soul to the company store(which will be the goverment) forget that America gives more monetary to the world than any other nation....they have govt that can take care of them....

oh and while we are de- industeralizing our econome and are getting rid of our nasty coal and oil and, return to the dark ages, lets also listen to those great progressives from the past and present(holder again) and have mass steralization cos there are too many damn idiots in America and SOMEONE( who better than the govt) has to control them!

Not sure exactly what you mean by the part I underlined (too many theys), but I have to agree with the rest of your post. That doesn't happen often with your posts, Brain.
