I would let the Republicans do it again when they take back congress in November.

US Mulls Afghan Bank Bailout
Panic Fuels Run on Bank 'Critical' to Afghan War Effort

Amid the panic the Afghan government insists that it will back the bank’s deposits entirely, but the run seems to be continuing and it is unclear how able they would be able to cover a major failure without international, presumably American, funding.

With all the political fallout from bank bailouts within the United States, the prospect of the US government going abroad and bailing out a struggling bank or even a struggling banking system in a foreign country, even an occupied one, would be a matter of considerable controversy.

That's an understatement. The opposition to the US bailout ran 99+% against, and that was to allegedly save the US economy. Any politician voting to bail out Afghan banks is toast and will likely face recall petitions before the election.

Even if Obama were to favor doing so, I doubt that a single Republican would vote to support it, and very few Dems would. In other words, it's not in the cards.

I heard a blurb about it on the news yesterday while driving. I haven't read your link yet, but what came across on the radio was that the bank had made large loans for risky real estate ventures.

Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

And yes, I think bailing them out would raise considerable controversy and criticism. I would probably be right there on the criticism since I don't agree with rewarding such foolishness.

And why would the Republicans sponsor a bailout? Bush stampeded a cow-like Congress into the first bailout, and the Tea Party was birthed and has been knocking off conventional GOPers right and left. The GOP is less likely to sponsor an Afghan bailout than the Dems, and that's saying something.

IF Obama decides to bail out the Afghan banks, and that's a huge if, he will do it using international organizations like the IMF, so that the political ramifications at home will be less. (Not like they'll be amenable to it while they're busy bailing out Europe...)

This is exactly how the US system of government is supposed to work. Things that the US people would oppose 99+% don't happen.

What part of that is a re-write Willbe? My information is that George W. Bush was in office at that time and that he advocated for the bailout.

If you have information that George W. Bush was not president at the time, or that he was against the bailout, I think it important that you bring it forward. The American people have a right to know.

And when will Greece be paying back the $50 B that "we" lent them through the IMF?
Bailing out *any* foreign bank is just not part of the job description of the U.S.

Firstly, in your earlier post you claimed the US is bailing out Europe, it isnt. Europe is actually has more exposure to Greece than the US does. Secondly, you claim the US is bailing out Greece through the IMF, it isnt, the IMF is borrowing the money from the US, at an interest rate of .25%. If Greece defaults, the IMF still owes the US the $50b, so all the IMF members will share the default, based on the agreements made between IMF members.

As for Afghanistan, more needs to be done to stop the corruption or any bailout is worthless, money just ends up in the hands of the warlords and senior officials.
