ORIGINAL: Aneirin Or at least start to gather the skills which will be of use when money is not around so much. I have no car, so gas is not a problem, locally I walk everywhere and there are some mean hills around here, other times I cycle or use public transport. It's a hassle, but it works. The purchasing of things, foodstuffs and the like, well I use a back pack for shopping, so over spending is fairly well out of the question as that extra one buys on a whim one has to carry it, perhaps shopping with a vehicle to carry is part reason for over spending. My diet is more of an Asian diet, consisting of mostly rice, fish and seafood, rice is heavy, but it's cheap and goes a long way, fish and seafood, I collect myself, also mushrooms and other forgotten wild foods. Seaweed is my next venture with sea lettuce being one of the most nutritional plants on the planet. Defence, well that is a problem, we can't have guns, knives or curved swords, but I have a bill hook and I am very proficient with a sling and can lob a half brick 250 yards with a high degree of accuracy, the terminal velocity of that brick makes it shatter on impact if it hits harder than itself. I believe I can defend myself if need be, but the best defence is not being seen in the first place, so hiding is the way. I am I think, moving away from the consumerist, moving more towards what humans were supposed to be before we got herded and controlled into the machine that satisfies the few at the top. I don't doubt there is going to be another financial disaster, it has happened too many times and always the poor suffer most, I am one of the poor and I know what is coming, so I study and practise skills that may very well be needed, but if they are not, then I can satisfy myself that I am not totally dependant on government and banks. I love to read about how you manage in the world. You are a very self-sufficient person, and that is no small feat. People that are innovative like you, will always find or make a way! Kudos to Anerin! Anerin, in response to your question asking if Capitalism is dying? I think Capitalism as we know it, will be coming to an end in the United States. It will probably take 20-30 years, but it is on it's way out. As more and more people are becoming dependent on the government to even live, I see the role of government growing and growing. Hopefully, we will end up with something similar and close to the Canadian system of Capitalism/Socialism. Issues like: health care, affordable housing, the growing number of the working poor that can't afford housing, food, or the basic necessities of life, and the huge numbers of unemployed and underemployed are going to make certain things inevitable, its just a matter of time. This is a great article explaining why Capitalism is dying a natural and a very s l o w death. http://www.opednews.com/articles/Capitalism-Is-Dying-a-Natu-by-Siv-O-Neall-100316-245.html
