A fire truck would be cute except for that pesky freedom of speech issue. We should not tolerate government, any government, interfering with our constitutional rights even through the use of false pretenses.

The city fathers must have been reading your mind Arch.  According to an article I checked yesterday, they have been denied a burn permit but they claim they will do it anyway.  The preacher did leave himself an out, though, saying he was still "praying about it".

I think a fire truck is a REALLY good idea.

Owner59 -> RE: Top US commander: Burning Quran endangers troops (9/8/2010 7:24:13 AM)

I don`t think the FFs had your abuse of the 1st Amendment or our GI`s in mind.

Perhaps we need a "2nd Amendment" solution in this case.

So you would not be upset at burning bibles or American flags?

I've never understood how "speech" came to include actual acts in the first place. Isn't there a difference between talking and doing?

Freedom of expression and the like.Speaking is an act.Civil disobedience,protests/marches etc. all protected.

It only limits the government from infringing those things.

Says nothing about regular folks trying to do something.

There is a little thing called drought.  FL has been dry for a couple of years.   You cant just start a fire with anything you want wherever you want.  That can violate your neighbor's right to "quiet enjoyment of homestead" (hard to enjoy it when the dumbass next door just started a brush fire and burned it down).

If the requirement of outdoor burning permits for outdoor burning was a violation of anyones "civil rights" then virtually every municipality in the country wouldnt require them.

C'mon sanity, you can do better than to try and claim a law that is on the books of about every town in the country is somehow a violation of your 'rights'. [:D]

Sanity -> RE: Top US commander: Burning Quran endangers troops (9/8/2010 7:46:08 AM)

Good question, I suppose its considered freedom of expression and therefore logically its covered just the same. Maybe someone could research it and post what they find...

I'm no lawyer, but I think I'm fairly familiar with English. And in my opinion, to say that speaking is an act in this context is facile. There remains a significant difference between talking (about something) and doing (it). But leaving that aside, I don't know where you're getting freedom of expression from. I only know where it says "freedom of speech". As for protest marches, wouldn't they be protected separately under "peaceably to assemble"?

Honestly, I think I will never understand the legal mind.

So a morons logic would dictate that government can use any excuse to trample our rights.

Good thing we dont have any more morons in charge of us than we do already I suppose... [8|]

Sooooooooooooooooooooo, if I join the "flat earth society" and want to start a bonfire of those damned round globes upwind of your house during a drought.  It's My constitutionally protected right and you wont do anything about it right?[:D]

Lucylastic -> RE: Top US commander: Burning Quran endangers troops (9/8/2010 7:57:10 AM)

whatever happens with this preacher cunt and his bunch of assholes, if one american gets harmed in "retaliation
Obama will get the blame

cuckoldmepls -> RE: Top US commander: Burning Quran endangers troops (9/8/2010 8:10:16 AM)

Yea, this preacher may get some Americans killed around the world including himself, but you know what, that's his right. There's no law that says you can't burn your own books that you purchased legally. He better damn well get a burn permit though if he's in the city limits.

If you want to blame someone for killing Americans, why don't you blame Obama, the democrats and RINO's like McCain for allowing Illegal aliens to kill more Americans than in the entire Iraq war.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Top US commander: Burning Quran endangers troops (9/8/2010 8:14:37 AM)

Maybe these guys ought to join with the Westboro Baptist Church and we could get all the nutbags in one place.

Lucylastic -> RE: Top US commander: Burning Quran endangers troops (9/8/2010 8:17:02 AM)

cuckoldmepls -> RE: Top US commander: Burning Quran endangers troops (9/8/2010 8:17:11 AM)

What planet do you live on where people can't burn what they own outside of the city limits? The only thing that could prevent it is a state issued burn ban during drought conditions.

Yes it is a good thing morons like some here are not in charge.

A open fire in a no burn area is such a great idea.  Let's set Gainesville on fire.

If it is so important to them why not rent a tree shredder and toss them in?

AlwaysLisa -> RE: Top US commander: Burning Quran endangers troops (9/8/2010 9:14:40 AM)

Ahhh, because a tree shredder doesn't have the emotional impact that a roaring fire carries.   These jerks are out to get noticed, it's all about making the biggest splash.

In a world where areas are under fire watch and the COUNTY has set in place a no burn rule.

Does anyone thing this will curb sanity and his friends?

Because MOST of the people who will be participating in burning Korans are the same who would vehemently oppose burning bibles or that would want burning  the US flag to be illegal.

I really considered trying to get a gathering of friends to burn bibles on September 11th, but eh... I don't care about pissing off idiots THAT much.

Wrongooooooooooooooooooo bunky.  Most places, you have to get a free permit.  They want to know what is being burned and about when.  That way, if it DOES get away, the fire dept will have a clue what to expect.  Nasty little thing called safety.
