Big fires in multiple houses and buildings in Detroit!
Twenty at last count, I'm watching it on CNN now.

Insurance scam?

I doubt it.  My guess is vandalism.

The future farm fields of Detroit just got a little larger.

Neither of you two wins a Teddy Bear!
They said it's high winds gusting up to 50 mph that are knocking down dead tree limbs which are falling on wires and then houses and setting them on fire.
And of course there's no money in the budget to trim dead tree limbs and the Fire Dept has been cut to the bone.
Another causal effect of this wonderfull "global economy".

Seems that it already did "blow over". That is apparently the problem.

A causal effect of the global economy because high winds knocked over some power lines which caused fires.

You go Popeye.

I've been noticing you're really on a roll lately.

Got a huge kick out of all these comments ... as I work here ... in Downtown Detroit! LOL

And before you extend your sympathies ... ... let me tell you ...

Downtown Detroit is a wonderful SMALL TOWN to visit ... why there are three casino's (real Vas Vegas ones) and maybe ten fine dining establishments ... well, perhaps twelve!

But 4.5 Million people live in the area ... outside the Detroit City Limits!

And if you want to find a suburban/exurban/rural area that is urban ... and unlike any other in the world ...

visit Oakland County ... Macomb, Monroe, St Clair Counties are fine, too!

Detroit, as a city, really does not exist.

Detroit, as a Metro area, is alive and vibrant!

Although your handouts are truly appreciated!

How about you Popeye?

I can't think of anyone on here who is more capable of an intelligent, articulate explanation than you.

Indeed, I was out on the street this afternoon ... in Downtown Detroit.

The wind IS gusting to 50 plus miles per hour ...

And it is howling outside now ... in Oakland County ... so they are not kidding you, as to the cause of the falling power lines.

Yet I was struck by your choice of words ...

And I believe ... causal effect ... is an accurate, insightful description ... for a number of reasons ...

okay ... now ... back to the levity ...

Enough blame to go around for everyone.

My heart goes out to the many families who lost everything.

Sorta depends on how many of those buildings were actually occupied, and not just tinder-dry shells.

"Our priority was trying to save the occupied homes," Williams told The Detroit News, adding the number was not unusually high but seemed so because they were concentrated. "We've had five to six pockets that have experienced multiple dwelling fires because of winds."

Ian Perrotta told the Free Press that he noticed a fire in his neighbor's Moenart garage on the northeast side; three hours later his own garage, several houses away, was ablaze.

"My immediate thought when I saw the fire was it shouldn't have been that bad," Perrotta, a former firefighter, told the News. "It could have been contained sooner."

Perrotta said it took more than 30 minutes for police and fire to arrive.

Doris Lee and her husband, Ernest Lee, told the Free Press they are devastated after watching their house in the 12300 block of Moenart on Detroit's northeast side go up in flames.

"I was changing clothes for work when I heard my neighbor knocking on the door saying 'Get out, get out,'" Doris Lee said. "We've lost everything. We just left with the clothes on our backs."

85 homes and garages.

Can anybody find a map of the homes that were burned or in the path of this mess? I keep seeing reports say East and West sides.

Not everything bad that happens in Detroit is crime related. geesh. Just for that, I think you should have to visit the area, just to see how nice it can be.

Of the 85 fires, the fire department only suspects that 2 of them could be arson related. The rest are being attributed to dry, windy conditions...kinda like California.

Seekingowner, You are right. I have been to 4 Packer games in Detroit. 2 at the silver dome and 2 at Ford field. Silver dome was boring and out in the boonies. Ford field is great. The small downtown area is really nice. The bars and restaurants are great, and we never felt threatened walking around. The new baseball park is also nice..
