I know someone who (with others) disposed of dead enemy bodies at their base with explosives.  He took pics.  I've seen them.

Weird shit goes on. My brother told me the other night about a headcase who was on his 5th tour in Nam who picked up a Bouncing Betty out in a field after a halt (where the whole armored group stops; don't recall his term for it) and started walking right towards him, tossing the Betty next to his head, while looking him straight in the eye with the "thousand yard stare" "ain't goin' back to the world stare". Wham! Mine went off and blew the dude's head off. Dude knew he was going to die in Nam. Self-fulfilling. Some of the shit he's told me, wow. He described what it was like to kill another human for the first time. Him or you. He said after about 30 seconds there's this feeling of confusion, and then a rush. He survived and the enemy didn't. Elation. A better rush than an orgasm, he said.

I have to take his word for it, as I've never killed anyone.

why are you so keen to see the troops kept there?

At least as much reason as there is for you to assume that all the lefties, without exception, despise the troops, yes.
If you're going to base arguments on unsubstantiated generalisations and sectarian propaganda, you don't really have any business about having your views misrepresented.

I was in the Army for 15 years, most of it active duty, I was Honorablly Discharged in 1985. I am not surprised at this. Since the reduction in size (we now have only 10 Divisions, there was 24 when I left) the standards went down, way down. The Army had 4 catagories 1 - 4, 4 being the lowest, in my time you had to be a 1 or high 2 to be consider to apply for Officer Candiate School, now there are Officers on active duty that are Cat 4. If you had a criminal back ground the Army would not take you, now I know where some soldier have been court martialed 3 - 4 times and are still allowed to reenlist. I had to have 5 years of experience before I could apply to be consider for Sergeant, now you have 2 - 3 years and you automatically promoted to Sergeant. I have heard that the Army and Marine will take those with psychological illness and are on medications for it, even people with austism are accepted into service. So, this comes as no surprise to me at all.

Would you care to back up any of this?? Categories?? Cat 4 officers?? Multiple courts-martial?? How did reduction in size lead to lowered standards? Automatic promotions for NCOs? Any of it?

If you could have just the tiniest bit of empathy perhaps you would understand what this means... if you thought someone kept your wife, child, sister, brother, friend's body parts... how would you react to that...

Consistently you show a lack of empathy towards other people

From a personal standpoint, about the same as I feel as people dividing up the ashes after a creamation.

Body parts are yuckier because of that whole "rot and maggots" factor.  And it is rather weird that a person would want a total strangers parts.  And I would say that a person from our country needs help, serious psychological help, if they are in fact keeping body parts.  And some health and sanitation classes.

People deal with the trauma of combat in strange ways; and, yes, many need help. But the keeping of trophies is as old as killing, and I mean the killing of... anything. Deer, quite conspicuously. Keeping a memento in combat is little different in kind than going to the taxidermist back in the world.

Typical Sanity post again. Ignore the content and attack the poster. Nothing rude about my last post, nor did I lay claim to any bodyparts. Any chance of you addressing the actual topic at hand ?

Oh right, so keeping deer skulls is the same as keeping human body parts. What planet are you on ?

I agree.  He needs to back it up.

Some of the military services did allow more waivers (primarily for small drug offenses) and started to allow more recruits with GED for enlisted personnel at the height of the Iraq war, but the rest of his claims are suspect, especially "Cat 4" officers.

While I won't deny that I've known some really stupid officers ...

I didn't say that. I said it's the same in kind if it takes place in combat.
Perhaps the nuance escaped you.

There was no nuance, you compared the two and are now angry because I pulled you up on it. You didnt even use the phrase "same in kind".

You said " Keeping a memento in combat is little different in kind than going to the taxidermist back in the world. "
Fyi its not a little different, its a lot different, to the point of abhorent to most people.

Uh???/ To quote the illustrious me:

Keeping a memento in combat is little different in kind than going to the taxidermist back in the world.

If you don't understand the comparison perhaps someone with a background in psychology can explain it to you.

BTW: In. Kind.

My point was more that it is not societally sanctioned in this day and age to keep a bag of noses or a necklace made of ears.  Which is one of the reasons that we have so few reports of this happening.

Although the fact that it was fingers made me wonder if there had been rings attached.  Back in the day before "professional" armies, loot was a major part of a "soldiers" pay.  Money was often converted into jewelry and the fastest way to remove the rings was to cut the fingers off.

However, even if true, I still do not see how this could affect the peace process in a country that routinely stones people, beheads, and cuts off hands.  I just do not see a few fingers being a big deal.

Well, the Natural History Museum about 10 blocks from my house has both.  And they do not make a moral or ethical distinction.
