How many US flagged ones, RML?

Isn't it cute how bloodthirsty Basiji gets when it's a Democrat giving the orders?

2 in 2006 alone. Both flying an american flag. One a cruiser, one a destroyer.

The names of those ships...

The USS Cape St. George and the USS Gonzalez

I think there was a communication breakdown, Tazzy. I was referring to US merchant vessels actually being attacked by pirates, rather than pirates who started shooting when they saw they were about to be boarded the Navy. Or were you just going for an obscure snark in the dark?

Are you saying USN ships are not US flagged ships? I can provide photographic evidence if required.

That's not even a good attempt at a hijack, Ken. Are you also prepared to argue that a warship is also an unarmed freighter? I gave Tazzy the benefit of the doubt. You lost that long ago.

You asked:

How many US flagged ones,

You said nothing what ever about armed or unarmed or what the ship's purpose was. If you meant unarmed civilian ship then you should have specified that.

And as to the silly slam at Bush Policy. There were
absolutly ZERO attacks by African Pirates, under Bush. Zero under Clinton, Bush 41, Reagan, Carter, all the way back to 1804.

Untill Obama, they didn't dare.

as happens so often, o59 is simply making shit up.

You know, even I'm starting to get embarrassed for you puppydawg:

About 30 Chinese rescued from pirate attack - CNN.com
Dec 17, 2008

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was at the United Nations on Tuesday for a discussion of the piracy problem and for the Security Council vote. [image]http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/.element/img/2.0/mosaic/tabs/video.gif[/image] Watch how the United States hopes to fight piracy »

"I wouldn't be here seeking authorization to go ashore if the U.S. government -- perhaps most importantly the president of the United States -- were not behind this resolution," Rice said after the council vote.

Asked if she thought U.S. troops soon would be on land chasing pirates, Rice would not speculate.

"The United States is part of an international effort," she said. "We do have naval forces that have been involved in this effort. What this [resolution] does is to authorize that the boundary of the maritime cannot become a safe-haven boundary for pirates. What we do -- or do not do -- in issues like hot pursuit, we'll have to see ... case by case.

Earlier, in remarks to the Security Council, Rice described the growing problem of piracy as "a symptom of the instability, the poverty, the lawlessness that have plagued Somalia for the past two decades," adding that the Bush administration "does believe that the time has come for the United Nations to consider and authorize a peacekeeping operation."

Off Africa's coast, pirates 'out of control' - USATODAY.com
Nov 19, 2008

The Bush administration is trying to coordinate efforts to stop the pirates, although military officials say they can't stop all pirates because there are too many ships in a huge area to protect.

"We're working with other members of the Security Council right now to see if there are actions that we can do to more effectively fight against piracy and prevent it," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Wednesday.

Meantime, the pirates continue to operate with near impunity across broad swaths of the Indian Ocean. They often anchor their seized boats near the ungoverned Somali coast and wait for the ships' owners to pay increasingly lucrative ransoms.

This year, pirates have attacked at least 95 ships near Somalia, including 38 hijackings, Mukundan says. More than 740 crewmembers have been taken hostage. There has been one fatality, Middleton says, adding that he fears hijackings could become increasingly violent.

Thanks for the quotes proving 059 is full of shit.

Bush did have an agressive proactive policy towards Piracy.

But no where in there is a Pirate attack on a US flagged merchant Vessel. That is of course what the Naval Officer I quoted meant. And he was correct. It is just pathetic to argue that Naval war ships are the same as a US flagged merchant (or Civilian). That is just a weak assed silly de-rail. Are some of you so dim, that everything has to written out in lenghty detail. Of course not. Tazzy is plenty smart, so she is obviously doing it on purpose. RML, I am not so sure.

tazzygirl -> RE: U.S. Marine commandos take pirate-held cargo ship (9/12/2010 4:26:02 AM)

Doing what on purpose... amswering a question?

Gesh... if you dont like how the question was answered, maybe you guys should start realizing its because you cant ask the question properly. IF he wanted to know about merchant ships, he should have asked. Instead, he asked about ships flying under a US flag. Does that mean that the MS Nautica, a US owned ship flying under the Marshall Islands flag doesnt fit that bill either? Or the Seaborn Spirit back in 2005, another American owned vessel sailing under the Bahama Flag? Both Cruise liners... both with attempted attacks during the Bush administration... both countering the argument made... along with the two previously mentioned.

The facts disprove what was claimed. You really should check out those pesky facts before asking such hard hitting questions.

luckydawg -> RE: U.S. Marine commandos take pirate-held cargo ship (9/12/2010 4:46:28 AM)

no, ships flying the Bahamanian or Marshall Island flags would not be US flagged vessels. If they choose to get out of paying taxes, min wage, Osh and a host of other laws and regulations by flying a forign flag, they are not US ships, and they lose some protection rights. Its a bussines decision they make.

What's an "attempted attack"?

The quote from the navy said no ships boarded. I guess this is what I get for trying to use a left wing source like "Common Dreams". Looking back I see that thier staff changed therms in mid paragraph, so someone looking for a quibble could quibble about it.

The reason I made the quote was to show that 059s assertions were full of shit,

and while there is a bunch of silly posting, no one is disputing that.

tazzygirl -> RE: U.S. Marine commandos take pirate-held cargo ship (9/12/2010 5:08:18 AM)

What IS your assertion? That US ships were immune before Obama? Clearly proven wrong. Do you honestly believe these pirates care what ship they were attacking? They attacked destroyers! Do you even think they knew what ship was what, who owned what?

The only point proven was that the pirates attacked purely on ability and access to whatever ship was in their vicinity. And, depending on the source, they had, possibly, good cause in the beginning.

Oh come on, im sure you have access to www.dictionary.com.

luckydawg -> RE: U.S. Marine commandos take pirate-held cargo ship (9/12/2010 5:17:11 AM)

Yes I do think Pirates care very much who they attack.

They can easyily see the flags, and actually have pretty good intell about shipping. They are fairly organized

Your assertion that they attacked destroyers is nonsense. The destroyers attacked the Pirates.

tazz, we have already quibbled over the fact that we are talking bout US flagged civilian Vessels. Which were not attacked untill 09.

And Obama killed the fuckers in a move I support and applaud.

And did so at the begining of the thread.

I gave the name of the ships, you can either accept what i say is true or look them up yourself. All these vessels were reported to have been fired upon.

And, honestly, if they were so bright, why were they firing upon destroyers?

Its amusing how you are defending the pirates.

No, the question was asked ... how many of these were flying a US flag?

“Every indication is that this is the first time a U.S.-flagged ship has been successfully seized by pirates,” said Lt. Nathan Christensen, a spokesperson for for the U.S. Navy’s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet. The last documented pirate attack of a US vessel by African pirates was reported in 1804, off Libya, according to The Los Angeles Times.

No one argued this is the first successful attempt. No one also stated we were discussing only merchant ships. They were brought up only when i found two US flag flying ships, per what Heretic asked for.

As far as the following...

Many here on these boards have questioned my education level because of typos... lol... for many reasons. But at least i know enough to split those words, look up the definitions seperately, and gleam an understanding from there.

Eh, thats just me i suppose.

TheHeretic -> RE: U.S. Marine commandos take pirate-held cargo ship (9/12/2010 8:47:53 AM)

Since you brought up the skirmish with the Navy ships, Tazzy, I was figuring you would at least be familiar with the incident in question.

I thought you were better than that. It makes me sad to see you throwing yourself away like this.

luckydawg -> RE: U.S. Marine commandos take pirate-held cargo ship (9/12/2010 1:57:44 PM)

Seriously, she thinks the Pirates came up and attacked the US destroyers, not the other way around.

Just rememeber Heretic. This sort of nonsense is going to get worse as the elections approach.

Tazzy is just desperatly trying to help059 make Piracy into a Republican v Democrat thing.

And apperantly all they can do is lie, and when called on it, quibble. and lie.

And remember she is making the claim that an attempted attack is the same as an attack......

But its the best they got.

Nope,I am making the proper use of force, avoiding using force recklessly and success,.......... a democratic vs republican thing.

What accomplishments do you rightest have to refer to?

TheHeretic -> RE: U.S. Marine commandos take pirate-held cargo ship (9/12/2010 3:36:40 PM)

You're just falling into the trap, playing semantics, Lucky. Of course panicing and shooting at a destroyer is an attack, and of course it is a completely different sort of attack than trying to capture an unarmed merchant or pleasure boat sailing under a US flag.

Owner59 -> RE: U.S. Marine commandos take pirate-held cargo ship (9/12/2010 3:42:03 PM)

Reading that old thread was entertaining, Basiji. It's so much fun watching you reverse yourself when you try to think ahead of the talking points.

"Sargeant Swagger." When somebody picks that up, I'll be sure to give you the credit for for first applying it to President Obama.

Well, my guess is the pirates knew the navy ships weren't out there fishing, so it would make sense that they might try and put up a fight instead of just running up a white flag. But I wasn't there so what do I know.
