From today's Daily Telegraph (UK)

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/799...

Well, I don't know what the truth is there - I think if I was investigating I'd be looking for a bit more evidence as to whether either of the couple had a clear interest in BDSM/breath play or whether he was simply having vanilla affairs and she found out.

At least the torygraph didn't use the term BDSM and brand us all murderers.

Can one actually go from saying "tighter, tighter" and then nothing? Dead? My pet and I experiment with very mild breath play. There had to be some time when she was saying nothing at all, concern should have kicked in long before he fell dead. I am very sorry for all parties involved. His actions following said accident do seem very suspect, depending upon the level of truth in said article.

It is very unfortunate indeed and I agree at least they did not refer to BDSM outright.

Yes.  Very easily.

I love breath play but it very dangerous.  I had the rope backwards one time and totally scared the crap out of myself when she fainted.  She loved it - she went straight to sub-space, but I needed some time to calm down.

Then I had to check all her vitals.  I was way too worried to even wonder if she was enjoying it at that point.

It can happen. I got a very stern lecture from a Dr recently, concerning this very subject. ( He was a very cool doc. :) )  He told me that even when someone knows what they're doing, the larynx is very fragile, and all it takes is for your sub to move the wrong way, just a little.

There's also the danger of occluding the jugular vein and/ or carotid artery. Death can occur in as little as 10 seconds if these are blocked, especially in tandem. It takes only 4 lbs of pressure to occlude the jugular vein. That's about the strength of the force of gentle pressure around the throat.

Does anyone have any suggestions concerning safer techniques with which they're familiar? Breath play can be fun, but I sure don't want to hurt or kill anybody.

David Carradine died from auto-erotic asphyxiation.  It is entirely possible to not know when too much is too much.  The whole point is to reduce blood flow to the brain and increase it to the genital areas.  That tends to reduce your cognitive and judgment abilities.
