I have always had some pretty bizarre dreams. And one thing that leaps out to me is how some of them are so similar to ones I've had for years and years. Ever get caught in a "dream/nightmare cycle"?

I have some pretty bizzarro ones as well and also have the recurring dreams that I've had for years.
My mother passed away a few years ago and she visits me in my dreams from time to time and I feel it's her way of letting me know she's with me it's usually during a time of great stress or I'm trying to deal with something, She comforts me with her presense or leaves some advice that I don't piece together til later. What I can't figure out though is why one of my horses (the Belgian) is in almost all the dreams that I can remember it's how he got the nickname "my dream pony". He isn't a major part of any dream really just mostly makes an appearance and is gone.

I have this recurring dream that I am running away from a killer snail. I try to run faster but it is no use it’s like I’m in slow motion and the snail is gaining on me all the time. I wake up with this sticky silver trail across my body but no snail in sight.

What does this dream mean professor?

I have two recurring dreams that started when I was a small child.  If either of them starts to cycle, they linger and rerun themselves over and over for days...

1. the vacant city dream: I'm alternately looking down upon, (as if flying) or up at (as if walking far below) an entire city of vacant buildings.  This is a dream that is not in color, it's shades of gray, the only sound is the wind, howling around a building or scurrying and scuffling along the street...the windows are all broken out, no glass, no shards, doorless openings to the buildings, no cars, just empty buildings devoid of life, skyscraper after skyscraper against the backdrop of either a gray sky (if I'm viewing it from below) or against  a backdrop of gray asphalt (if I'm viewing it from above).

The worst sensation is that of being totally, utterly, completely alone, a serene sort of calm or resignation is intertwined with a nagging sort of alarm and I always wake up in a sweat....

2. The fire cave nightmare:  I'm being chased through catacombs of stone, natural stone caves that are ablaze with red fire, I'm always running towards a crystal blue lake amidst the flames, but I never quite reach it...I usually wake up disoriented and out of breath...

There are and have been others, but I sleep with benevolent dreams for the most part, and these are the primary two that are recurring dreams once the cycle starts.

Yes, I go through dream/nighmare cycles.

For a years at a time, I will have an unpleasant recurring dream or nightmare.  Then, the underlying situation causing the dream must get resolved, because I stop having that particular dream.

One dream I had for several years involved jumping an endless series of hurdles.  One after another after another, until I woke up.  I would actaully jump in My sleep, I'm told.  I stopped having that dream in My twenties.

Then, about ten years ago, I started having a dream about starting out on a leisurely hike, then suddenly ending up thousands of feet up in the mountains on a narrow ledge.  I order to get down, I had to jump over to another narrow ledge several feet away.  In the dream, I always made the jump, but it was terrifying.  I had that dream regularly for a few years, then it stopped.

Right now, I'm not having any recurring unpleasant dreams like that, fortunately.

I have recurrent nightmares, although I haven't been visited by them lately (thank God).  One involves running from someone chasing me, and I keep falling on rugs, and downstairs, and slipping when running around corners, etc., etc.  Another involves snakes, lots and lots of snakes, really big, really ugly snakes.  (the upcoming flick Snakes On A Plane is not one I will see).  Another involves those big ugly wood roaches, but since I had one fly down my pajama top when I was six years old, I'm pretty sure I know where that one comes from!  Those are the top three I can recall at the moment, but recurrent dreaming is common for me.

I nearly forgot!  I actually am having a recurrent dream that is pleasant!  Well, a recurring theme...my sister and I have a new cake decorating company together...and I dream of new designs for cakes! LOL

Ugh, I hate those roaches lol....

My two primary dreams are 1- I'm in a building, going up and down stairs and elevators...... looking for something or someone.........over and over.....and 2- walking across a field, or deserted road, and all of a sudden snakes and alligators are literally growing up out of the ground all around me....

The worst dream I can remember is one from when I was a little boy. In our old house, late at night, I'm on the phone, which was at the back of the house, in a hallway..... suddenly, a vampire comes through the front door, striding towards me............ I can't move...........then I wake up, and I'm standing by the phone. I almost shit my pants! I have to go through the darkened house (towards the front door) to get to my bedroom.... ah, if I could only run that fast now.....

hi, i used to have this dream that still affects me today.  When i was a child, not sure of the age.. maybe 8 or younger, i had this dream about a little leprechaun man with a hand drill getting on the bottom bunk of my bunkbed and drilling a hole up through the top and into my back. i could never move or escape this and even now if someone touches me with a single pressure point on my back it freaks me out. lol. my kids learned early not to touch me there, poor things. i'd whirl on them with a yelp... think it scared them more than me.

I have many reoccuring dreams. In about 99%  of them I am running away from someone or something, mainly males. And I have been having dreams of running away since I was a child. Theme parks used to always been in my dreams, but now it's just running away. And there always seems to be some kind of death nearby. For the past few months, there has been the same old black house, and it's always nighttime in my dreams. That or close to night.
And the only nightmares that I have are of torture. I guess that's reoccuring because only in my nightmares am I actually caught and tortured...

About a month ago, I was visiting my sister and headed out the front door to my truck.  I noticed a white card lying on the doormat and bent to pick it up, and found myself nose to nose (or closely enough) to what turned out to be a juvenile rat snake.  I went back into the house to call Dad and describe the snake to ask whether I should kill it or not...lol.  (My sister has a two year old).

Had a damn wood roach in my room a couple nights ago.  Man, I love that Bengal roach spray!  Sprayed the damn thing, went to put the spray back...and came back into my room to find it ON MY BED!!!!  It saw me and jumped off and went somewhere to die...and it took me forever to get to sleep.  Just when I was dozing off, book in hand, I dreamt it was on the pages of my book...and woke myself up with a start.

There were two different times growing up when we had water moccasins in our house. No questions about killing those! The first time, my dad went into the kitchen for a snack, and found the snake, and beat it to death with a mop lol..... the second time was after he had died.... it was summer, I was home all day.... my mom and me spent hours trying to find the bastard.... we finally did, it was underneath a bed.

When I was little, I used to have dreams of a big German Shepherd-like dog chasing me, and then upon catching me, it would start gnawing on my leg. At that point, I would wake up!

The other one I remember from when I was little was that I would be in a museum, and a statue would suddenly come to life and start moving towards me.

And believe it or not, the one other dream I vividly remember was when I was in kindergarten. In it, the evil Malificent from Sleeping Beauty had me tied to a merry-go-round and just kept laughing and laughing and telling me that I would never see my mom and dad again.

I wonder if that was my first thought of BDSM...lol

Nightmares. Nothing but nightmares. All centering around the parallels of molecular and atomic structure.
