Picking a "type" is a highly inexact science, and I've personally played with all sorts of people.  Some people are just jaw-dropping to me even though they are way against my usual type, and others seem to fit everything I normally look for and yet do nothing for me.  But I think that for all of us there are qualities and traits that just draw us in when it comes to prospective partners.  I'm wondering how different the "type" you look for in a top is from the type you look for in a bottom. 

For me, since I'm bi, the issue is even more complex, I guess. In general, I'd say:

The kind of boy I like to top:  Introverted.  Proper.  A bit stiff and shy.  Literate, polite, and very very buttoned down.  A fancy little English schoolboy.  John Oliver from The Daily Show, perhaps.

The kind of boy I like to top me:  Sort of a cliche, really.  Butch.  Macho.  Gruff.  Brutal.  Leather is very sexy.  Sons of Anarchy makes my prick prick right up.

The kind of girl I like to top:  Sarcastic, quirky, intelligent. Strong willed.  Capable of  being abrasively witty.  Tina Fey.

The kind of girl I like to top me:  Still quirky, sarcastic, and bitingly witty.  Aesthetically, a little bit alterna-trashy but still feminine.  Fishnets with tweed skirts.  Leather jackets with bubblegum pink nail varnish.  Playful but cruel.

The one quality that cuts across all categories:  Nerds are always hot.

firstly I will speak as a dominant woman
I like intelligence, conscious thinking, looks are important to me, though looks can grow on me with the right personality. I enjoy someone with humor, someone who can be serious, someone who is honest, someone who can use their own initiative and someone who is adventurous and curious. Our fem sub has all of these qualities and more!

I never considered being with a dominant man because I never believed there would be anyone strong enough to blow my mind but I found one and this is how it had to be.
He is hugely intelligent, vibrant, fun, very good looking, fit, he is a control freak not only within our household but in his entirety. He is consistent and never wavers, he has the ability to show a deep love for me, he is honest to a T and he is never demanding but has high expectations of me. He is popular with others, he can converse beautifully at any level, he can listen and has the ability to make me listen, he has the ability to help me achieve, he is patient but naturally firm. On top of that he has a filthy mind [:)

It took me a long time to get to this place and with my hand on my heart I can honestly say that if we lost maisy-jayne tomorrow, we wouldn't consider another sub and if I lost him tomorrow I would just give up and leave this lifestyle.

Interesting.  So it sounds like most of the same deeper qualities are attractive to you across the board.

It must be unsettling but quite thrilling to have found happiness and satisfaction where you expected it least.

I look at it mostly from a relationship perspective, because I only do that sorta thing in a relationship.

I don't like dominating men very much, if he's weaker than me, then I'm just not interested, at all. Weaker can mean either emotionally, mentally, or physically.
The men I like to submit to are usually a bit assholey, arrogant, extremely intelligent, funny, and very predatory.

The Women I submit to are usually a lot like me. And the women I dominate are traditionally more naive, gamer geeky, sweet, and quirky.

At the risk of somewhat tastelessly ordering people off the menu:

I like my Doms to be pure Alpha, sharp, smart as hell, predatory, witty, and sometimes too indulgent of me.
I like My female subs to be sweet, childish, maybe awkward, a little willful, but really needy.
I like My male subs to be articulate, sensitive and graceful, and obedient as hell.
I don't submit to Women.

It's so complicated to be a Switch.  I seriously think we should get a prize every time we manage to get our needs met and meet someone else's at the same time.

Sorry... I've had a few Doms...and a few subs. I've been into this life for some time now. *s* That's how I know my tastes so well.  And, I didn't mean all at once. I'm greedy as hell.... but not stupid! No one gets what they need from playing with someone who is spread too thin. 
Are you asking for help in finding a Dominant?

I cannot say I have a specific type for a Dom. I may have said younger for the past few years, but now I am being more expansive in my age range.

I would like to say he should be intelligent, verbal, intense, passionate and sizzling hot, but a nice guy.

I have had variations on those themes, just not in the same body.

The girls I like to dominate enjoy someone who is kind, casual and makes them smile - even in the midst of scenes. Drama-free is essential: I love a girl who's genuinely hesitant, yet wants to try, but I won't fight anyone for control. Exhibitionism is a big plus.

I haven't subbed for a girl yet but I'd want to be dominated by someone whose style had the same key elements as mine: kind, fun, erotic.

I only play with guys as part of couples, not really interacting directly with them, so they have to either want to be cuckolded or else have a drama-free submissive side.
