You can find starter guitar packs that include a guitar, amp, picks, strap, etc. Fender has them, as does Ibanez. You can probably get one for under 200 dollars. Certainly not top of the line, but good for a beginner.

We might go that rout to start with.

700 is a high ball park we'd probably go more the 100 rout, an trust me, when our situation is going well, we can easily afford a pricey gift with a little care and concern with handling the budget and saving our moolah for it.

Excuse me.

Why ?   I think you ought to save the cash for a rainy day.    Get a regular non electric one off of craigslist- for $25.

You really should not be over spending money.  You do not know what kind of winter it will be- or if there will be emergency expenses.

$700 is a lot of cash.

Girl!!!     Think before you get reckless.

Estring walmart used to have them for 86 dollars, an I always said no we don't have any room in  our tiny lil space for stuff like that, an he'd sigh, agree an walk away.

But I am thinking maybe for Christmas, it'd really make him so happy.

He needs to do it himself.  Every model feels different and if he winds up with something he is not comfortable with it'll defeat the purpose as he won't stick with it.

A beginner won't feel comfortable on anything, really. That won't matter so much. It wouldn't hurt to take the guitar to a repair guy to have the string action (height) set. Many of these guitars have the strings set pretty high off the neck.

mnottertail -> RE: I want to buy daddy an electric guitar from a pawn shop. (9/15/2010 3:20:38 PM)

yup, agreed, and if used, make sure that it is a straight line off the straight neck, by sighting from the side, because them old ibanez, assassin, hell I even got a good old fashioned 60's audition in here.......the necks will warp on your ever days, and even your really great ones given enough time.  If the neck looks like a boomerang, the guitar will sound like a boomerang, therefore it is a boomerang and thats what you should use that one for.....

But some of them are raked and pegged so goddamn high you could break your ankle trying to pin them strings.   His finger tips will hurt enough until he builds pad....be a good girl and get him some beebalm stuff like you use for your lips in them quarter size around little cans at the check out, so he can rub his fingers in them at first........

Depends on the size of his hands.  He needs to something that fits them.

I am betting he is wanting to be an axechopper and hes gonna swing it, fits or not.

Check out the Fender Squier series electric guitars. Economy version of their higher end Stratocasters and Telecasters that are remarkably good instruments for the money. They can be bought for under $200 new and closer to $100 used. They are all over Craigslist and most music stores will have a few on hand. Chains like Guitar Center will have a wide array of them. I think they are the perfect beginner guitar. High enough quality to encourage the new player rather than discourage and at a price point that won't break the bank or leave you with a bout of buyer's remorse if the new hobby does not stick.

Well like I said, I could spin it in such a way to still be a surprise I guess. Cause I am after all creative.

The only guitar anybody ever bought for me was my first one.  It was a gift from my parents.  My hands were rather large even back then and the neck on that guitar was too small and made things difficult to learn.
