CynthiaWVirginia -> CAT SPILLED TEA. KEYBOARD...HELP PLEASE. (9/16/2010 7:04:13 AM)

Using on-screen keyboard via mouse.

Keyboard skips letters, like 't' unless I type 'e' and I get 'te'.  accident was at 1 a.m.  Turned keyboard upside down for 10 min. and wiped off.  Finished long letter.  All seemed ok.  Woke up and keyboard has 1/3 of letters acting up.

This is an ancient Dell, WindowsME.  I tried to use keyboard from my old XP, but utilities couldn't find the driver or whatever thingy.  keyboard I want to use is emachines and nowhere on the list of choices.  Plugged in, not seen as present.

Going crazy crazy crazy!!!

Will other keyboard ever dry out and behave?  If I remove the back and take a blowdrier to it?  I left it standing on end all night.

Tea was huge and hot, I used a Sam's cup from pizza slice area.  No sugar, just Splenda, Truvia, and aspartame.

It may dry out. Its hard to tell. I have spilled drinks onto my laptop, and the keys did what yours did, and a day or so later, it was fine. I have seen drinks spilled on others and they are still wonky to this day.

Either way, pets and liquids dont mix. Good luck on this not happening again. lol

Try popping off the letter buttons that are causing trouble, and swab the inside of them with a qtip
dipped in rubbing alchohol. Dried up tea is sure to be as sticky as soda, and the alchohol will help dissolve that.

It can take 24-48 hours for the keyboard to dry out completely. My kidlet spilled a glass of water on mine and it took a couple of days before I could use it again.

I spilled pop on mine once and after it dried, I had to pop all the keys off and wash each one. After it worked like new.

what Bear said...I had both tea and soda and it like a charm after a cleaning.

I would put your hair dryer on high to dry it out. That has worked well drying phones and other things left in the rain. We would dry damp and wet phone terminals using hair dryers as well...

What happens when you plug in the other keyboard?  It should just be plug and play.  Any keyboard should perform the basic functions just being plugged in.  It would be any enhanced functions that might need a specific driver.

yep, i thought my laptop died after it nicked my hot chocolate as greedy as it was, I gave it to my ex so he can take off all my details in it...but now its alive again...I can't say how well it works as we still didn't find time to meet to get it back but according to him it works fine again.

also another one (for which sadly i can't find the damn cable) I had what you experienced (without using a drink, though) and there my ex (he works in the IT industry) told me that it usually helps when I would hover it as then cat dirt (such as fur) would get out if it in between and so that would stop...so hovering it could also be an option. As you spilt a drink maybe you could use the hair dryer on it for a while...

Cynthia

I'd rinse the keyboard down with distilled water preferably, tap water if not available. You've got to get rid of the compounds in the tea that will be left behind when the water evaporates. While wet chips are a no/no, you've got a fighting prayer with a keyboard- should just be membrane switches which are pretty robust. But if they used some type of conductive goo in there, you don't want to rinse all of that away, so I'd be wary of soaking it.

Using a hairdryer should speed up the drying process, but it shouldn't make any difference.

And yeah- shoot the cat....

Sam
