Montana GOP policy: Make homosexuality illegal

HELENA, Mont. – At a time when gays have been gaining victories across the country, the Republican Party in Montana still wants to make homosexuality illegal.

The party adopted an official platform in June that keeps a long-held position in support of making homosexual acts illegal, a policy adopted after the Montana Supreme Court struck down such laws in 1997.

The fact that it's still the official party policy more than 12 years later, despite a tidal shift in public attitudes since then and the party's own pledge of support for individual freedoms, has exasperated some GOP members.

"I looked at that and said, 'You've got to be kidding me,'" state Sen. John Brueggeman, R-Polson, said last week. "Should it get taken out? Absolutely. Does anybody think we should be arresting homosexual people? If you take that stand, you really probably shouldn't be in the Republican Party."

Gay rights have been rapidly advancing nationwide since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Texas' sodomy law in 2003's Lawrence v. Texas decision. Gay marriage is now allowed in five states and Washington, D.C., a federal court recently ruled the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy unconstitutional, and even a conservative tea party group in Montana ousted its president over an anti-gay exchange in Facebook.

But going against the grain is the Montana GOP statement, which falls under the "Crime" section of the GOP platform. It states: "We support the clear will of the people of Montana expressed by legislation to keep homosexual acts illegal."

Montana GOP executive director Bowen Greenwood said that has been the position of the party since the state Supreme Court struck down state laws criminalizing homosexuality in 1997 in the case of Gryczan v. Montana.

Nobody has ever taken the initiative to change it and so it's remained in the party platform, Greenwood said. The matter has never even come up for discussion, he said.

"There had been at the time, and still is, a substantial portion of Republican legislators that believe it is more important for the Legislature to make the law instead of the Supreme Court," Greenwood said.

This is really not unusual for the Republican-Taliban party these days.

The Republican candidate for governor in Minnesota, Tom Emmer, supports a "Christian youth ministry" rock group called "You Can Run But You Can't Hide" which has praised Muslim nations as "more moral than us" because they execute their gays.

Then of course there is the famous C-Street "Christian" frathouse in DC, where conservative lawmakers meet to have their affairs and help each other cover them up.  This hypocritical bunch have donated close to a million dollars to Uganda to help that country get their capital punishment law against gay people passed.

It's a kinder and gentler Taliban here for the most part, they wear different clothing, and speak English instead of Pashtun or Arabic.  But it's the same primitive crowd in spirit.

The whole idea is paranoid stupidity.
That's about all the energy I care to waste on the subject.

Yep. There are still a lot of places around the country where somebody should put up a sign that says, "welcome to XXXX - set your watch back 30 years."

With a bit of luck, the exposure will get this cleared up in proper course.

If you care to dig out the official state Republican Party platforms you will find many (most?) include a plank demanding the reinstitution of sodomy laws.

Well yes, but they also aren't keen on women voting or blacks being allowed to own stuff, are they?

What I am wondering, is do they really have an issue with all homosexuality, or just male homosexuality?

Texas is even worse.

Texas GOP attacks homosexuality and civil rights in 2010 party platform
June 25th, 2010 10:45 am ET

Timothy Gabelman
Cincinnati Liberal Issues Examiner

"The 2010 Texas Republican Party platform has been issued. It includes a series of statements that go far beyond the tradition language of “family values” that can be found in most state party platform literature and the Republican National Committee (RNC) seems to be avoiding the issue altogether.

In a surprising twist, the harshest attacks from the Texas GOP are directed at the LGBT community.

The platform claims that gay people should not be allowed to have custody of children (“We are opposed to any granting of special legal entitlements, refuse to recognize, or grant special privileges including, but not limited to...custody of children by homosexuals...” [sic]). It states that issuing a marriage license or performing a civil ceremony for gay people should be punishable by jail time (“We support legislation that would make it a felony to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple and for any civil official to perform a marriage ceremony for such.”). It also calls for the re-enactment of a 19th century Texas law that forbids homosexual acts (“We oppose the legalization of sodomy. We demand that Congress exercise its authority granted by the U.S. Constitution to withhold jurisdiction from the federal courts from cases involving sodomy. “)

Of course, the Texas GOP is not only attacking the LGBT community. They also call for evicting the United Nations from the U.S., requiring drivers' licenses to indicate citizenship, opposing legislation to allow stem cell research, rescinding no-fault divorce laws, reversing Roe v. Wade, and shutting down the U.S. Department of Education.

The RNC has issued no statements in support or opposition of Texas' platform, leading to questions of whether this anti-gay bias and ultra-conservative viewpoint will carry into other states in the near future.

Although right-wing fringe and extremist organizations have often called for the repeal of civil rights for American minorities or for the expulsion of the U.N., this is the first time that one of the U.S.'s two political parties have issued such radical statements."

The reality is the GOP has never strayed far from the party of Jerry Falwell and the Moral Majority.

The tea party nonsense is just the latest reincarnation.

Interesting isn't it?

Now that O'Reilly has started to use the phrase "leftists loons" it keeps getting repeated here on a daily basis along with "leftists" and "lefties".

But of course the conservatives we have here are all independent thinkers who undoubtedly, and coincidentally, came up with those terms on their own.

Thorn, ok, so if Obama said he was going to end all welfare for one year we'd see all the black people who are on welfare (now) go out into the streets and shout "Halleliuyah" right? They'd be saying "GOD BLESS OBAMA" right? Am I close?

I just think its significant that black= welfare among the nonracist conservatives who supposedly are looking out for the best interests of minorities.

Rex, in the inner cities and in S. Carolina where I live that's the "norm."
Do you think they'd be singing Obama's praises if he ended all welfare for one year?

The thing is- was this an over sight- or is it a real plan.

By now- everyone has a gay relative, or gay neighbor or gay co-worker.

Personally, I was hoping the wedge issue would continue to be immigration.    Not gay rights.

I dont know what PA would do.   The PA homeland security guy went into hiding.

They are going to use illegals to build barracks at the border then arrest every homosexual (only men tho cos two women are hot)  and put them in the said barracks to guard the border. All homosexuals will be fitted with mangling devices in their asses and kept in cock cages so they dont do nothing sinful  at night.
This will have the effect of focusing all their rage on incoming brown people and obliterating them so they never get to try and cross the border again.

then it will all get blamed on obama
edited for typo
