pogo4pres -> Gravy or Sauce, the red stuff on your pasta (9/19/2010 10:46:54 PM)

I grew up with an Italian (by marriage) uncle, and have known probably hundreds of others from Boston to Baltimore. I learned from these Italian folk that if you have sausage, meatballs, a piece of pork, or chicken the stuff is no longer called "sauce" it is called "gravy". Like on the Sopranos, they always called it gravy because it always had meat in it. I am curious if this is just strictly an "east coast" Italian thing or does the rule apply all over?
