Ok, I admit it.  I'm a city girl, transplanted into the country.   I need to find a home made cure for keeping mice out of the wood pile.  (besides a cat, because our dog finds them to be a tasty treat)

I am probably the only person in this rural area who puts mousetraps IN the woodpile.   So far two have bitten the dust.   I don't want the little critters to migrate into the house.  With no cats, they have a clear path across the yard.
When we moved in to this house, there were mice, that have been eradicated with traps, I don't want them back!

Is there something I can pour, or sprinkle near or on the wood to repel the varmints?   Someone suggested cat urine, but that smells so vile I'm hoping for another idea.

FR-  when I cut a bush down or brush - mice come out.

Move the wood pile.

It's a HUGE pile of wood...probably 10-12 cords, at least.  I was hoping for something a little easier. :)

I am surrounded by sugar cane fields, and while I love living here, so do the mice.
I have 2 cats that have defended my home successfully for the past few years, but
every now and then Id go into the shed to get the lawnmower and see something scurrying
about, so I started placing mothballs in both the shed and the garage. Ive not seen any sense.

"Bounce" dryer sheets are excellent for repelling mice.

decon is good.

But not by a drink of water.   The idea is to dry the mouse- if it drinks water after decon it lives.

   Putting mouse traps   IN the wood pile , and then faulting the mice for being there seems a bit counterproductive ,  as they're effectively being lured in !

   Especially at this time of year ,  mice are looking for places to make warm  nests.  It's far easier - and kinder( they're not evil beings - just innocent mousies! ) - to simply repel them.   As someone suggested using moth balls/flakes - or other repellents  ( there ARE several)  will keep them from finding your wood pile to be a desirable home.

    The other thing mice need to move in - is a food source.  So you may want to check around to see if there are any berry/seed producing plants nearby - and eliminate , or cut back.

If it were spring, I'd suggest a nice big black rat snake.

Do not use poison if you have pets: in this case a dog. The dog will likely eat the dying mice and make the dog sick.

My cat would not touch decon.  A dog might.

I use bait sticks. I just toss them behind the hay bales, etc...where the dogs cannot reach them. When you live in the country, killing vermin is all part of the experience.

Unless you have a very small dog, the amount of poison the mice eats to commit suicide, will not be enough to even phase the dog. I would not allow them to get to the poison, but the dead mouse, while gross, won't kill the dog.

There are electronic rodent repellants which we used to demouse a sitting car earlier this year. For inside the house we use bait inside bait stations. That was back when my dog was still alive. According to the vet, the mouse poison people say a dog cannot die from eating a poisoned mouse but she distrusts their claim.

But in the woodpile? Better there than in the house. Nothing wrong with them hiding there, just use a rake to get some wood off the pile if you're feeling squeamish.

Mice are nothing, it's those big ugly rats that hang around the barn that terrify me.

Yep. I don't mind mice in the barn at all. Unfortunately I store a lot of hay and grain in the garage. Since I park vehicles in the same garage and mice just LOVE to climb all over/in a nice warm car and chew up wiring.......I try to keep the population in there under control.

Oddly enough I've never had a problem with them migrating into the house.

Thanks for all the replies!   Im going with mothballs to repel them, let the neighbors have fun with all the displaced families, :)

leave the mice in the woodpile, use traps and peanut butter (not cheese) in your house, if you live in the country, the mice are in your house, you have my word.

Live and let live - it's not as if they're Tea-Party Republicans...

I live in the country, too, and have done for years. My advice would be to learn to live with them. Mice in the woodpile doesn't sound so bad to me. If they were in your house in any numbers, I'd understand the need to evict them.

I'd just use the traps inside....leave 'em alone outside.  Baiting the traps will draw more in.  If you live in the country, critters are something you'll have to get used to.  I don't know, I guess I'm a "live and let live" type, I've never been bothered by finding a critter outside.  I have used traps and poison inside, only because I don't share my indoor space!

Make enough noise when you're getting wood, they'll duck out of sight.....

Let me know if this works please. I live close to a dumpster for a few restaraunts and I am starting to name the rats and mice.

U.S. Postal service sent out a message to all letter carriers to put a sheet of Bounce in their uniform pockets to keep yellow-jackets away.
