Whoever is behind the scenes and pulling strings can't be satisfied with more money than they could possibly spend, they have to see how much more they can get. I think politics should not be a career, but something one does for the benefit of the community after you have been productive in the private sector. Oops, I messed the quote thing up!

Another reason why I don't read UK newspapers, sport, I have no interest in sport especially football and golf only serves to stop people building on the land. Could it be if a person does not read news papers and does not follow sport and the celebrity bullshit, they might be able to see more clearly ?

Whenever I start to believe that the US has the absolute worst in journalism, I just go over to The Daily Mail and the Sun and see what the WAGs are up to. Heaven help me, if all goes as hoped, I'll be living with that nonsense within the year! I agree with LaT about the Bread and Circuses, and Divert/Distract theories...but if someone is smart enough to do all of that, why aren't they smart enough to follow the story line and see what happens to societies that use those tactics? Or do they not care, believing that since they are mortal with a finite lifespan, that they will be exempt from those consequences? Fortunately for me, I believe that this is all just a game we are playing with ourselves, we make problems when there don't need to be any, create drama and dissension just for the fun of experiencing it. I also believe that there are those who are intentional "pot stirrers" on both the large and small scale, their job is to keep folks unsettled, riled up and generally tilting at windmills... Oh! Look! there is a dragon! Sancho, bring me armor! Make ready my sword and lance!

Sorry about not getting back sooner.........busy with life stuff. I think that we all tend to look at issues in a very immediate way rather than big picture/historically. I was so amused at the drama over health insurance reform. The far right (my youngest sister) had a whole Chicken Little reaction. "The sky is falling the sky is falling!!!!!!!" And she just could not GET that I found her reaction to be so grossly overly dramatic. I did a bit of research and found a dozen or so past issues, that were hugely disliked and dramatized, in the past, that are now a part of our daily life and have actually benefited millions. Two things, if we took partisianship out of the mix of current political drama, there would be much less drama. And, if we looked at most of the issues big picture, with a longer time frame in mind, they would not be as big of drama. But we are all about immediate gratification. 'we want it NOW!!!' When the reality is that most of the main issues, like our financial woes, cannot be fixed NOW. It took decades to create the mess, what narrow minded moron can possibly imagine it can be fixed in 2 years or even 10?

It's rather funny, people believe whatever their favorite media source tells them. It matter not if that source is telling flat-out untruths, or has slanted and skewed everything until it bears little resemblance to the truth, people believe it. It's sad, but how many of us have the time to dig through everything out there about every subject? If Fox News told everyone that the health care initiative was the best thing ever, and how lucky we are, then most everyone would have been fine with it. Did anyone ever read Robert Heinlein's "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress"? It's been a few years for me, but remember when Manny thinks he has screwed up, but the Professor finally tells him that there had been a different motive all along? That's what this feels like to me.

So tell me Popeye, since it is obvious that you know all of this stuff already, why is it that you continue to post as if you had only one view of the world, which seems to be a narrow minded, bigoted view at best? Why do you pretend to be obtuse, when you are much smarter than that? Is it just for the fun of it; to get people riled up for your amusement?

Thorny is right, after all, as wonderful as I believe that I am, and as honest and well-intentioned as I believe I am, I'd totally suck at being a public servant...OR a politician, which is supposed to be the same thing, but somehow isn't. When I think of my friends and neighbors, and remember how much well-publicized difficulty my very small town has had over the last few years, I KNOW for a certainty that you can't find just anyone to hold the reins of power.
