The neighbor, 77 and I want to start a walking program.

She suggested joining the Y- but the cost and it is enough of a drive that - the idea is flawed.

Too many people here have dogs- which go crazy when someone walks by.  So that is jarring on the nerves.

Yesterday- we went- by the river.  However that venue is not ready.  It is bull dozed and mud ruts.  The mall is a drive.  Sidewalks here are too narrow for 2 people when one carries a cane.  Sidewalks are also in poor- and bad shape.
She does not like to walk on the street.

I cant believe how happy she was when I asked her!!!  She was joyous.

I think- I know of a spot-

My question is- what do YOU do- in your life- to get a bit of exercise?

Particularly- when this involves an out of shape person, an old person, or a frail person.

How often- how do you hit the optimal ideal?

Also- what did not work- for you- that you thought WOULD work.

Your comments are welcome!

;-)

since i've moved here, going to the mailbox in the central location is my exercise. it's a nice walk, my kids often go with me. i think they're more worried about mom falling than getting exercise, but the company is nice.

Exercise? Moi? HAHHAHAAAAA!

I am lucky to live in a town that literally has hundreds of miles of paved asphalt bike/walking paths, and a rails-to-trails path system. Granted, the climate here is not often conducive to the outdoors, but if you want safe outside walking it is there. We do have "hills" in the sense of gentle grades to the paths, but there are a couple of handi/elderly homes with wheelers, and they get around fine.

The BEST indoor walking is this giant indoor "outlet" type mall that is up the highway a few miles. You have to drive there, but it's worth it for walking, FLAT, set up in a big oval, and chairs to rest in. Just don't go when the kids are out of school.

I work in Iowa City Iowa...........at lunch time I head right on out the door of the shop. We have sidewalks, hills, and loads of great eye candy.

When it gets really really cold, or hot. I have an eliptical in my basement.

We were up here today. Had a picnic lunch and a nap but there are miles and miles of trails for walkers, mountain bikers and horseback riders.

How about a trip to the zoo? If you are close to downtown, walk the halls of the Court House
or State Library. Any nearby facility that is closed by early evening will also have an empty parking lot.

Try walking meditation, then it does not matter where you walk, the joy is the meditation whilst walking and believe me one's awareness of the surroundings is intensified, for beauty can be found everywhere if you know how to look.

Walking Meditation

I am one of those people who could never meditate, but now I know how to and it was the walking meditation that provided that key I was missing in my past attempts to meditate.

pa, you don't have to spend money, or drive anywhere to develop a walking program, although I do recommend that you have supportive footwear.  Other than that, it's a matter of putting one foot in front of the other, one step at a time.

The dogs in your neighborhood will get used to you walking by at certain times and not go bonkers.

I take our 3 dogs out for a short walk almost every evening, and there is only 1 dog that still barks at us.  However, it is my uncle's dog(he lives across the street from me), and it's more of a "hey! come visit, i know you" kind of bark.

Well as my help told me when I had foot surgery a couple of month's ago.  I average 15,000 steps a day at work.  Sometimes up to 25,000 but at least 15 a day.

We also go to the local park and take the dogs for a walk.  We've got parks with lakes...etc here.  Whether winter or summer it is our destination at least 3 days a week.

I also work out at the local gym.  My doctor has given me permission again to start running with the Wii once more.  So, I'm gearing up to do that as well.

So, basically whatever is near at the time.  Whatever needs to be conquered.
