I am glad that we have left the secret covenant of BDSM behind us and brought it forward into the 21st century.
Perhaps it was more exciting because it felt more risky. Perhaps because we were young and throwing caution to the wind and because people took more risks sexually back then too.
Thank goodness the selection process isn't so limited now.
There was a lot more men than women and so women got even more unwanted attention than they do today and men often had to resort to trying out their skills on other men.
BDSMers only had their small group to talk to and so their learning and understanding of this lifestyle was hugely limited.

Now we are much more liberated. We can learn about anything and everything through sites like this. We have a much bigger choice on a play partner or life partner and even if we don't have a play partner, we can feel a part of this 24/7. Play has become much broader and wider. Theres BDSM play going on today that we wouldn't of dreamt of back in the 80s. It may of felt edgy but it was actually fairly tame in comparison with things that go on today.

The 21st century saw a real coming out in the world of BDSM. We no longer have to put up with small intimate groups. Young women and men can find others within their own age group if they wish and submissive men are far more likely to get some play time with a Mistress without having to pay for it.

The one thing I have noticed, over perhaps a period of about 10 years, is that certain events are being age categorized. This was bound to happen eventually with the huge crowds now appearing onto the scene. There are certain clubs that are geared towards the young and beautiful.
I wouldn't dream of going to a vanilla night club. Not because I don't love dancing but because its aimed at the young and I would just feel out of place and uncomfortable. There are a few scene clubs I wouldn't attend for those very reasons. I was talking to a friend of mine the other day. This guy is highly respected on the scene. He is a renowned edge player who is guest of honor on just about every scene related event going. He told me that he stays away from certain places because he feels too old to attend. He is 34! He predicted this would happen about 3 years ago. The bigger the scene gets, the more it will divide.

I remember when I was a kid I would have to walk five miles to get ahold of a decent dildo and a pair of nipple clamps.

I will dance on the grave of the last member of the old guard.

Dancing with a dildo in the pale moonlight.

Cowboy Copas (old guard)

Ah, the good old days, when pro-dommes charged a nickel for spankings and a quarter for a whipping.

And you walked five miles to and from the dungeon, uphill each way, in the snow.

While I never wondered what it would be like to snort a chocolate chip cookie out of my nose from laughter, I now know.  Thanks so much...

80's Dominants had really big hair!

And lycra pants.

I believe the entire group Ratt typifies 80's dominants.

I thought Twisted Sister was more exemplary.

Excuse the lateness of this reply...just happened upon your message.
YES. I grew up in NYC and then moved to Detroit in the late 70s. I remember Destiny and Sir Michael well, had visited their home a couple of times for play, as well as Hellfire West. Hellfire (east) like most clubs, deteriorated into a zoo pretty rapidly. Anyone remember the Eulenspiegel Society? The Pleasure Chest in NY? Its bulletin board? Response ad magazines?

Hey, you forgot Mistress Mir! She was also a CDL/trucker. Played with her a few times back east.

When D founded Fetish Temple, then Wicked!Detroit, things picked up here.

As a final comment, the gay SM clubs were always far, far more advanced (and active) than the straight ones.

Ah well.

Regards to all.

Also need to add Mistress Lash to the list of Dommes from the time period in NY, and The Chateau.

I hate contributing to old threads but I felt the urge to ask a question.
Has anyone ever noticed how most of the old BDSM focused so much on female dominants? Unless it was a gay club, of course.
I did this stuff without the club scene to explore but if I had.. there is no freakin way I would have let some female touch me.

Madame4a -> RE: Domination in the 1980's... (5/5/2011 5:49:38 PM)

Mir is still around and going strong

Hello A/all,

I remember a place that advertized in L.A. called Lady Laura's Dominion. I don't know if the place was famous out side the southland; or, if Lady Laura ranks with the ones mentioned. Perhaps it's just the power of advertizing in the local "underground" newspapers.

There was a Mistress there who, during her time there, went by the name Pilar....

Respectfully,
Mike

Ahhh, the days of scening to the warbling sounds of Motley Crue.
How quaint it was.
And the spandex, My lord, my eyes-I still don't think they've recovered from a few 80's spandex nightmares/visions.

tommy5340 -> RE: Domination in the 1980's... (5/6/2011 5:46:36 AM)

Does anyone know where I could find some of Mistress Ann Murray videos?

It is truly a shame you do not get the same quality of people today as you did back then who were genuine seekers of more from humanity. Now you get wankers, abusers, users, social outcasts and those looking to just have kinky sex. Thank you internet for all that wonderful connectivity you brought us.

I imagine it was pretty fly back in the 80s! Linen suits and those bigass cell phones and the hair slicked back and Duran Duran and the whole gorgeous gaudy parade of Reagan era debauchery and then you had the underground full of unspeakable, unutterable, nameless bliss....

But two things man:

1) I know for a fact both from talking to people who were there and reading some of the old underground publications that even in "the good old days" there was always a contingent bitching about how much better it used to be "in the good old days" and how the whole scene was just ruined ruined ruined RUINED these days by the goddamn kids and their goddamn hippity hop music....The malcontents we will always have with us.

2) It's also pretty awesome today! It's a big beautiful world and it's all about having positive self-regard and being awesome. Awesome things happen to awesome people. PMA, my friend PMA, PMA is where it is, was, and always will be at.

Well the AIDS epidemic changed the whole sexual landscape: at the dawn of the 80's, wasn't nothing couldn't be fixed with a shot of Penicillin, a lot of things changed as a result that we're still sorting out.

socio -> RE: Domination in the 1980's... (5/8/2011 11:05:38 PM)

Like it's been said we look with rose tinted glasses on the past. That said I admit I was always sorta interested in how the "old school" operated within it's shin-digs. My thinking being if people are still talking these ladies must have been *really* good.

with that said I feel lucky to be young enough to have grown up with the net exposing me to kink. I may never have had a chance on finding an underground magazine or a newsletter, but now all it takes is one click to know I'm not strange. And I like to think that's the great advantage my generation has over the one before it within bdsm. How many more people will realize their not unusual in their desires and learn positive ways to express them? How many people after realizing THIS is what they want more of in their lives will in their search for more also wander past tips for safe and healthy play or proper technique? Even though I don't have any hindsight on this I feel lucky.

(also the spandex sounds terrifying. wonder how many cans of hairspray got killed the night of the events)

Kana -> RE: Domination in the 1980's... (5/9/2011 6:04:23 AM)

The Niners were pretty dominant in the 80's. So was Edwin Moses. And how bout them Edmonton Oilers?
