quote:
I cannot understand why you keep defending this nutjob. Despite appearances, I am not a great fan. But, in my opinion, he's no dumber or more dangerous than many other world leaders, and I truly believe that a man needs to be judged by the truth of his words and actions. The reason I get irritated is because Ahmadinejad appears to be misrepresented at every opportunity, and whatever he says, we are told he is lying, regardless of whether there is evidence to support the view or not. What this looks like, to me, is propaganda. The same sort of demonisation is levelled at Castro and Chavez, Hezbollah and Hamas all the time. The reason is simple. The US, despite claims to be a fan of democracy, really can't stand the idea that other people might have other ideas about who is going to lead them, and what they are going to think. And many people just fall for this nonsense. I have no problem with criticism of Ahmadinejad and his regime based on their treatment of women and homosexuals (as long as one can avoid claiming Islam is evil, because it isn't). But I have more of a problem with criticism based on lies and what often looks like deliberate misrepresentation.
