Surely you are not suggesting this was the work of a criminal mastermind?

She went looking for and found 2 idiots, slept with them, paid them, gave them her 16 year old daughter to use for sex, bought the guns, prayed with her husband before bed, got back up after he was asleep and unlocked the door, secured the dog, and stood by while the 2 gunmen shot her husband and stepson. As her husband lay dying, she took his wallet and split the money with the 2 hired killers. She called the police nearly an hour after her husband and stepson were dead. Her daughter served 5 years in prison for knowing about the murders beforehand and not calling the police. All this because her stepson joined the military and she wanted his insurance money.

Sounds like a plot to me.

Sorry Mike, this probably isn't a great case to use when arguing against the DP. Low IQ or not, this was about as premeditated as you can get and Lewis herself has said more than once that she knew what she was doing was wrong.

It's a sad thing, but Teresa Lewis was held accountable for her own actions. It would have been an injustice had the fact that she is a woman, 'religious', and a grandmother (I read a UK story on this, and they kept calling her 'the grandmother' WTF??) been considered in her sentencing. The OP asked:

IMO, the double standard should not exist. As regards this case, in the end and where it counts, it didn't. She did the crime and she paid the price, which is exactly what should happen regardless of whether a person is male or female.

Agreed....and yet the two trigger men, Matt Shallenberger and Rodney Fuller, recieved life without parole for shooting the two victims while they slept.

Rodney Fuller cut a deal-a guitly plea and a promise to testify against his co-conspirators in exchange for life w/out parole. Teresa Fuller plead guilt on the advice of her lawyers based on the photos and evidence of overwhelming guilt. They felt given their client's lack of criminal record, no history of violence and the sentence given to Fuller that their client would also recieve life w/out parole.
It didn't go as expected.
Matt Shallenberger changed his plea to guilty midway through his trial. The judge (the same one who had sentenced Fuller and Lewis) felt it wouldn't be fair to give one triggerman death and one life, after Shallenberger's deal with the prosecution, and so he sentenced him to life w/out parole.

None of these three people are/were innocent of this crime. All deserved punishment....equally. Was it equal?

Both links taken from the Save Teresa Lewis website...definitely NOT an unbiased source of information but a good one for some court documents.

For the record....I have zero interest in arguing this post or the points made. My feelings on the death penalty are not solid...especially when I hear the daily news updates of the Petit family murders in Cheshire CT. Both of these crimes are horiffic and all of those involved/found guilty deserve punishment.

The extent of that punishment and how equally it's given, ultimately, is the question for me.

It is not the threat or severity of punishment that is a deterrent for crimes. It is the certainty of punishment that deters criminal activity.

The woman admits to planning to kill her husband and son. She hired men and sold her daughter's body for it. They should have shot her the day she admitted to it.

But what if her admission was false, or made by an alien who took on her form just to confuse the courts, or made by an unknown twin sister who just wanted the other one to die, or or or....

How can we ever be sure that we are not killing the wrong person!?!?!?

Not a problem Mike.

I was just trying to emphasize something else about the case as opposed to the other thread about it.

But don't take that as me saying the death penalty should not be discussed here.

This is opinion only.

Let's say you were a defense attorney.  You've already lost the case on it's legal merits.  Your client obviously did what she said she did.  You've obviously lost the "reasonable doubt" angle.  What's left?

Find a way to get your client the smallest sentence possible.  Death being the largest.

How do you attempt to influence those who may have any way to assist you in succeeding?

Play the victim card in any and all ways that you can think of, including public opinion.  If you get enough folks to feel sorry for the criminal in any way, shape, or form, the more there will be public outcry.  You can already count on a certain amount of this because there are folks who are completely opposed to the death penalty.  That really isn't enough.  You've got to make a large number of people feel that she should be spared to get the protesters going and the messages to the Governor's office.  That stay of execution is possible if you play it right.  (By the way, this helps your career for future defense cases.)  Use the old concept of her being "the weaker sex".  Tell people how religious she is and exploit that.  Make her seem as much as the non-violent person as possible.  Who wants to see a little church lady put to death?  The better she looks, the more you're going to have folks not so sure they feel strongly about the death penalty in her particular case.

If you had a client that was going to die, wouldn't you be trying everything?  Grasping for any straw that might hold?  That's all this is and it's all that it is in a lot of cases.

Even my bleeding heart won't let me shed any tears for this woman.

I only wish they would have tortured her before hand as well.
