If you fit into the subject line above....how's it going for you? What can I expect (such as headaches and aggravation)?  Got any tips or recommendations? I will be weighing all options that I am (at least currently) aware of.

It's just the beginning for me. This is my first week unemployed. It's been more than 25 years since I've been in this situation and it's all different than the last time I was out of work.

Im sorry to hear that you are facing this situation. Although not TAA or TRA certified,
both my sons were unemployed weeks apart from each other, and those few weeks made
a big difference for one getting extended UA benefits and not the other. Best of luck to you!

If you're over 50, expect age discrimination when looking for work. Many people over 50 can't find jobs, but are too young to retire. Most companies prefer hiring younger workers because it keeps health insurance premiums lower. Age discrimination is against the law, but is very difficult to prove. Unfortunately, I don't see this changing any time soon since the US still doesn't have universal health care. Eliminating insurance companies is the only solution. Good luck finding employment. I hope you're one of the few lucky ones.

Therein lies another part of my dilemma....I am over 50. Believe it or not there are some added benefits to being over 50 (within the TAA realm) but they are rather limited. Some of my skills are specialized and fit into a narrow window of the job market, but other skills fit into a broader range of opportunities.

I am also reluctantly prepared for the likelihood that I will have to relocate for future employment. While TAA provides some benefits to assist me in that, it's really not my first choice. If I stay where I am, I will most likely face being underemployed as the job market in my area has dramatically shrunk in the past decade or so.

The economy sucks right now. Younger people are having problems finding jobs because they lack experience. Older people are having problems because they have too much experience (companies don't want to pay more for experienced workers) and companies wanting to keep insurance premiums low. Probably the best place to be is somewhere in the middle. Do you have friends who work for companies that might be hiring? The best advice I can give you is to get any job you can. Then while you're at that job look for something better. It will be easier to find a good job once you're employed.

Not to be the bearer of bad news but I am 52 and after 11 months of being unemployed, my prospects are down to working as a gas jockey for my local convenience store chain (Wawa for those in the PA NJ DE area)

Desperately,
Some Knucklehead in NJ

Most areas have a career center.  There you can find job listings- resume help- and training.  The training for interviews - if they are there- go to them.

most places want you to apply online.  It helps if you know someone- so ask your friends ....
