Status: offline 		I was just curious,is it possible for someone else to find out your address via through your IP address on the internet or through your e-mail address?

Status: offline 		Usually, no. There are a couple of ways if certain circumstances exist, but I have no intention of posting them here and don't recommend that anyone else do so, either.

Status: offline 		It is possible, but usually not without a court order. Your computer connects to the internet via an IP address assigned by your ISP. If this is a dynamic address (as mine is) it will change every time you reboot your router. Your current IP address will be known by every computer you connect to, it has to be like this, or they wouldn't be able to communicate between each other. But the only way to get from that IP number to your actual physical address is by asking the ISP which service user was using that IP address at a specific time. And they won't tell, unless you are the government or the Police, and possibly, not even then.

Only the ISP can tell your physical address from your IP number.

One might disguise ones IP number by connecting to someone else's computer via a whole series of other computers. This is where the term 'proxy' comes in. The computer you eventually end up talking to sees the IP address of the last computer between you and them, rather than your IP address. If you have a long chain of proxies, and providing they don't pass on your original IP address (anonymous proxy) you could make it very difficult for someone to trace back to your original IP address. And even if they did, they would still have to go to the ISP to get your physical address. The same is true of email.

But, and this is important, many people are not aware of the many ways in which it is possible to harvest all sorts of data about a person based on something as simple as a user name or a photograph. Give someone enough clues, and if your home address is on the net somewhere, or hidden behind an insecure password, it is more than possible that someone might be able to track back to you if they were persistent enough.

EDIT: Re: Email...

If you have a website registered in your name and address and you send an email from it to someone else, I guess it might be easier to trace back to a physical address. Hmm...

it can be possible IF you fill in your details at email accounts such as yahoo. I had once the experience that a guy from canada, where I never had the interest to meet in the first place, figured out my date of birth as well as county that way (the others I had not filled out). Since then I don't even put my name into their forms and instead just my initials or so, because when I googled my email address I found it as well. Therefore I make sure not to leave such details ever with an email account.

Status: offline 		It can be done but you really have to know what you're doing, but someone can easily found out the town you live in just from your IP. That's easy.

According to http://www.ip-adress.com/ I am in Heswall, UK.

I can assure you this is utterly incorrect, and that if you were going to start looking for me there, you might as well start in Manchester or Birmingham for all the chance you would have of finding me. The back search on an IP address only gives the location of the ISP server, not the location of the user of that specific computer. You need the ISP to translate that IP address to a specific service user and their actual location.

Yes, but not the average person.  Law enforcement, government, some hackers and internet providers have the right software and clearance to databases that can associate your ip to your address.  It is very complicated for the average person to try and get someone's address from an IP address.

Maybe.  It depends how you contact "someone".  If you are using a provider like AOL, you connect to them, then connect to the internet through their pipeline.  Only internal AOL personal could get your ip and then your address.  Someone looking at it from the outside would see the trail end at AOL. 

The same is true if you are using a remote hosted email service like CollarMe, Yahoo, Gmail, then your trace is from them.

I was going to leave this one alone because I concur but since it's still alive........

I know someone who can do it, but as said there aren't many who can. Frankly, of the few who can, most have better things to do with their time. It's not quite as difficult to get all the way to your ISP, but even that, there are few who can get there. To get all the way back to you there are two ways, one is to subpeona the info from your ISP and the other is to actually hack the ISP, which is beyond all but the best of the best.

If one of the rare folks who can gets a bug up their ass there is really not much to do about it, but it's really no worse than snail mail. For example if you sent an email threatening the President, you could go to a library, setup an email there, send it from there right ? NO. You had to sign in and probably show ID. That's a trail. You could use free wifi, but you better literally steal a computer with which to do it, because that is only one more level of difficulty.

But now think of snail mail. Send the same letter. Everything you can do, if you think it out, you still have a 95% (est) chance of slipping up. You need a clean room, rubber gloves, get the letters for the text from newspapers from all over the world and make sure there is no DNA on any of it, ANYONE'S DNA. Non lick stamp. Mail it from out of state. Do not drive through anywhere with cameras, even in a stolen car.

In short, to find or to hide is a complex procedure. I wouldn't worry about either much more than a helicopter suddenly stalling out right over your house.

My guess is you are using a free program, there are programs able to track your physical address. Try (or rather don't) sending a serious sounding threat to a head of state and then wait how long it takes for the cops to show up.

Your average person? Wouldn't worry about it and the people who are capable of doing so are usually in rather well paid IT jobs and too busy earning money to bother with your address.

Once you have somebody's MAC address (Media Access Control address) you're a good step closer.

Status: offline 		My guess is that IPs are like area or zip codes in the US, they can get you close, but not right there. That's where either court orders or serious hackers come in, because someone somewhere has to have signed on the dotted line. There is almost always a trail.

Still for an average stlker, even with a brain as big as a baby's arm holding an apple, I would worry more about meteor....... wait a minute, I don't want to get hertz started again LOL.

Certain government agencies have programs that can give you the physical address, but yes, most "hacks" are actually password guesses or people logging in over insecure networks (airports are usually good for that), not very likely that your average person or kiddie will find out, I'd be more worried about the sky falling ;)

Though a lot of people use similar or the same nicks, so googling for them or the email addresses might give you a good idea, especially if they once filled out an online form and gave their address...
