AlwaysLisa -> A rainbow of color? (9/25/2010 8:31:26 PM)

Am I the only one semi freaked out about the latest Skittle commercial, where the young man has a "skittle tree" growing from his chest and mom is harvesting the candies?   He asks if they can treat his affliction and mom sweetly denies him this as she hurries a wheelbarrow of candy away.

I never know if it's just me...so figured I would ask.   Kinda creepy.

That commerical really does freak me out. And makes me not want to eat Skittles. I don't want to contribute to that poor kid's suffering!

I looked at that clip, there is a reason I TiVo most of my television shows, I cannot stand commercials. Do not get me started on Flo the Progressive Insurance lady

Yeah, but you're a sub.... Maybe they're shooting for the sadist audience.  [8D]

Yes, I have to admit, it was a little creepy when she tickled him to make the candies fall faster, but it was creepy in a funny way.

Ok, I feel much better about the tree now. Thanks for that.

Termyn8or -> RE: A rainbow of color? (9/26/2010 6:10:18 AM)

I have to admit this is a tough one. But it just now came to me.

Look what has happened right here on this forum, and probably in alot of blogs or who knows what else on the net. Ole Termy might be getting slow in his old age but remember go back to the root when you get lost. Thus :

What is the purpose of advertising ? I mean the base answer to the question for ALL advertising in the world. The answer is to attract attention. So now that ad has made you propogate it and watch it, and beyond that actually discuss it. Think of it, they don't even have to pay for much airtime, it's probably hit youtube by now and will propogate itself.

Whoever came up with that spot probably got a bonus, and of course most likely called a drug dealer on speed dial LOL. How many cut the commercial off before knowing what it was for ? I bet none, as they played the viewers' minds into curiousity, and thus got their name in front of your face.

If you think outside the box you see, it was brilliant.

Bingo!

Everytime I see a bag of sour skittles, I'll be thinking of "sour milk man".

Now, if I could just get the most recent e-trade baby ad out of my head. [:D]

Funny thing is, I don't trade online and I don't eat skittles...these commercials are like earworms, though. I like a good laugh and all these ads provide it.

<-------------easily amused.

It got ya all talking about skittles right?

The commercial did its job.

You may have a point there. Skittles: Now for Sadists!

In theory. The question will be if more people buy Skittles more frequently. Otherwise they are maintaining their current sales or pumping money into a disturbing commerical while sales slack off. I don't have those numbers so I don't know.

I do know that the ad makes me actively NOT want to buy Skittles which is usually not considered effective marketing. However, I'm only one person and you could well be right. That more people will talk about it, get a hankering for Skittles and buy them than are completely revolted like me.

Termyn8or -> RE: A rainbow of color? (9/26/2010 7:53:58 AM)

Well some time back I actually asked a stupid question (yes ME ! ).

Around election time I asked why the hell would anyone vote for a candidate just because there were signs on people's lawns endorsing said candidate. The answer was name recognition.

I guess the principle is about the same. Of course there is the possibility the we are not the wierdest people on the planet. (yikes, what have I just written ! )

Missokyst -> RE: A rainbow of color? (9/26/2010 9:43:16 AM)

The commercial is creepy.  I don't know why but I immediately started thinking of it like I view most child actors (though there are no child actors in play), cash cows to be used until they fail to serve their purpose.  I normally change the channel when skittles commercials come on.  Their ads do not entice me to eat skittles, and they don't stop me from eating them if one crosses my palm.

I agree on your first point, Tivo has made my life immeasurably better.

As for your second point. I'm sure she's a very nice woman in real life, but I've never wanted someone to die in a fiery car crash more than that Flo woman. I would never buy insurance from that company based on her alone.
