PROMISES, PROMISES: Waiting for Abu Ghraib amends

WASHINGTON -- Fending off demands that he resign over the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, then-Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld told Congress in 2004 that he had found a legal way to compensate Iraqi detainees who suffered "grievous and brutal abuse and cruelty at the hands of a few members of the United States armed forces."

"It's the right thing to do," Rumsfeld said. "And it is my intention to see that we do."

Six years later, the U.S. Army is unable to document a single payment for prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib.

Nor can the more than 250 Iraqis or their lawyers now seeking redress in U.S. courts. Their hopes for compensation may rest on a Supreme Court decision this week.

Words said are akin to bullshit until those words carry actions. If these words have come to nothing, hey, what did anyone ever expect for the road to hell is paved with good intentions. But if those in the right positions have failed to compensate the tortured for their pains, no doubt that may have exagerated the threat towards your country, for what may have been a person in the wrong place at the wrong time, may well have created a terrorist who will undoubtedly reap revenge, firstly for themselves and the deity in whose name they fight.

But because of the failings of those in power, often it is the people who put their trust in the people of power are the target of those who bear a grudge against the machine.

No, Obama didn't tell us that.

Economists, that would be the people who study the economy Popeye in case you get confused, told us that.

You'd lose that bet. I am opposed to beheading anyone. Now if you had said if I had my way they would have been waterboarded, youd win that bet.

Speaking of bets and waterboarding, Sean Hannity comes to mind for some reason.

Well why doesn't Obama amend this with a stroke of his pen? He could if he wanted to.

Is Obama evil (just like Bush) or was Bush right all along?

Any leftist can feel free to answer.....

Is that how that works?

He can do anything he wants with just a stroke of his mighty pen?

Well hell, then let's save ourselves some money and cancel those November elections.

They don't mean anything anyway when we have an omnipotent ruler who decides everything.

Termyn8or -> RE: PROMISES, PROMISES: Waiting for Abu Ghraib amends (9/27/2010 3:46:55 PM)

The power of executive orders. Most forget about it as it isn't much publicized. Dunno about suspending elections, EOs can be overturned but I think it is pretty damn difficult. I think elections could be suspended by EO but that would only fly if there was actually combat on US soil. Of course if the incumbents expect to be replaced..............

Step one in figuring out how this country works is to forget everything you learned in school.
