I cant locate the thread.  This must be what my friend was talking about.

Hennen announced his support for Congressman Paul Ryan's (R-WI) proposed budget plan, which includes cutting Social Security benefits for anyone under the age of 55. "Look at the Paul Ryan plan," Hennen said on the show. "Paul Ryan says, you know what, if you are 55 and older, we're not touching your benefits.  Fifty-five and younger, we are./snip

Sooner, not later, both sides have to make big changes in how Social security is funded. It is going broke. New ideas must be put on the table..

Betcha it would be quite well funded if those in charge had to collect from it instead of having their own separate retirement fund. But when I proposed it on the forum people did not agree. This is what you want, this is what you get.

I fully support it. I also hope they begin cutting over 55, based upon other assets, also.

" Means " testing should be part of any Social Security overhall, and probably will. A decrease in disability benefits that have nothing to do with retirement should also be part of it.

Not so sure I can agree. Why should one person lose their house and everything else they worked for all their life and another just be able to hang out drugged out all the time and not lose anything ?

Every coin has two sides.

I think everyone getting SS check right now, IS getting mine.....

I don't expect there to be any when I get that age, and more importantly.....I am planning for it.

Ah but gloom and doom would be me whining about it! I simply do not care because I refuse to expect it. If I should get something, bonus, if I don't......I will be fine.

It is a bankrupt system that no one is willing to sacrifice to fix....so, it will fix itself. One day there will be no more and people will have to rely on themselves and planning, as they should have to begin with.

LOL.   I am pleased with how precious metals are doing.   :-)

Of course many will say it is a bubble.   So- whatever.  I trust my finger- not some fat finger flash crash.

You farm is a good investment.  One day- I hope to have some land.  Not a farm- but some land.

They do have to use it, since around 1987.  The old-school civil service pension isn't available for anyone hired after that.

Ok, I read the story - it said the gentleman who was collecting was unable to work right after he finished college.  While his condition is unfortunate, Social Security was not originally intended for his condition.  Social Security was supposed to be for someone who worked X number of years and paid into the fund before retiring and only then enjoy its benefits.  Later on it became a fund for widows and children and disability.  The government began spreading it too thin.  We pay into Social Security all our working lives - it is not a government freebie.  If we were mandated to contribute the same amount to a private fund of our choosing - it would be Your money to do with as you wish, and any remainder to leave to whom you choose.  As it is, some people die young and never benefit - some people work till they retire and die only a short time later.  The one advantage SS has over a private fund (assuming one would have contributed to said private fund) is that SS would pay you an amount no matter how long you lived past retirement - say you live till your 115 and you retired at 65 - that's 50 years of benefits.  A private nest egg even carefully managed may well have been depleted by that time.

The government has been playing the numbers games with Social Security and Medicare and it'll get to the point where you have to be 86 to start collecting benefits.

I bet you could cure most of the SS problems by 1) means-testing the benefits, and 2) contributing based on all income, not just on <= $106,800.  Currently the guy making $106,801 contributes as much as the guy making $30 million.
