What do you feed your cat, dog, bird etc?
Do you have any big no-no's about the food, did the food you give change over the years, etc?
Did you discover any preferences your pet has?

My cats get dry and can cat food but when I moved over to the UK a colleague who looked after them once spoiled them with more expensive cat food as well as cans with fish...that lead to some problems as my cats refused my food more often now as they of course preferred what she gave them (there was no need to bring anything in from her side as food was here for them during my absence). However, I continued with the additional tin of fish (tuna, mackerel, whatever all that stuff is called - I don't eat fish, so I am not that familiar with some of the names) sometimes and was glad to get that idea from her as I never did that back home in Germany.

sometimes my cats get treats from the table but thats most of the time only meat and on rare occassions contains pasta or rice.

However, that colleague who looked after mine once was against giving her cats cat food which is in jelly or gravy....now...I prefer the ones in gravy, because ok, they suck out the gravy at first but it is so much easier to get it into their plate....

yesterday I gave them a tin of mackerel and a tin of sardines and it was obvious they preferred sardines way more, as sardines were eaten straight away whereas mackerel wasn't even touched when I went to bed (though it was eaten at last when I got up this morning).

So do you have any form of rules what you feed and what you dont feed?

also as my cats know when to stop eating food (they are in shape) I always offer the card box of dry food and place the card box on the floor....with 5 cats I can't be bothered to fill their bowl all the time....that last then for about a week or so and I know that in case I stay longer than planned away (work or leisure) they will be fine as food is there

The dogs all get Sojos, fresh fruit and veggies from the approved list, and meat. No table scraps AT ALL and very little dog treats.

The cat gets dry kibble and whatever he catches outdoors because try as hard as I could, he will NOT eat the good stuff...aka Sojos and raw meat. The fucker will turn up his nose at raw steak but eat crappy Purina kibble. No table scraps or treats.

The horses, sweet feed mixed with calf manna and either grass or hay, depending upon the season. Apples and pears for treats, depending upon availability.

The fish.......flakes.

My dog gets Solid Gold's Wolf King dry dog food but he likes it mixed with water to make gravy. My "hard limits" as far as pet food goes are corn and wheat, which most brands - even the so-called "healthy" brands like Iams and Science Diet - use as filler. He rarely gets table scraps, but he does get them once in a while.

When I worked as a nanny in Ireland their two dogs got every evening all what was left from breakfast, lunchboxes and dinner mixed with dry food and water...

wasn't impressed about that,and happy to let them have my lamb from dinner (there i figured out that i don't
like lamb...)

My cat gets dry food. Wet when I want to slip her some meds. Sparingly on table scraps if any.

I avoid over feeding my cat- as she likes to jump up on me.

I will buy the off brand- tho I do check the protein and % of components.

I switch up the canned and dry food daily. Mostly buy the indoor formula for weight control.

For the record, my Zelda wishes I mention, she's NOT fat, she's fluffy. (She's 20lbs of "fluff") If you want to rent out ad space on her belly, let me know.

My rotten brats would prefer Fancy Feast, but at .54 a can, that adds up fast, so I give them Friskies prime filets and the shredded stuff. I've tried giving them real chicken and beef, they won't touch it...go figure! Dry is pretty much whatever, but I get an indoor formula and/or hairball formula. They like the Science Diet. They get commercial kitty treats, no real preference there. If they don't like the canned food I put out, they'll go eat the dry.

Here's an interesting thought......I'd always been paid twice a month, and bought cat food to last them two weeks, didn't seem to be a lot of money, or cans. Now that I get paid once a month, I've realized that they go thru like 120 cans of food a month, and at least 15 lbs of dry food. I split a can 4 ways, 2-3 times a day, and I have two dry feeders out so they can graze if they are hungry. My cats aren't fat, and they don't overeat just because it's there. I just never realized how much food they ate in the course of a month....I get all sorts of looks now that I'm buying canned food by the case...I'm sure the folks are thinking "crazy cat lady", but that's not true.....I was crazy loooong before I got 4 cats!

My pups eat Solid Gold MMillennia, and my birdling has a diet of Zupreem and Lafeber foods. In addition to their regular veterinary care, the pups have a health and wellness screening performed annually. The vet is pleased with all of their blood levels, as well as their weight and coats. She attributes their good health to regular health care maintenance, diet, exercise, and a lack of table scraps.

my dogs get authority chicken and rice or lamb and rice, they tolerate it well, some other brands gave them upset stomachs. i don't need three sick toy breed dogs so i don't upset things with lots of table scraps. maybe once in awhile i might give them a tiny scrap of fat. they love that. the cats prefer any brand of indoor cat food over any other formula but like meow mix the best. the parakeets eat some seed mix that has all sorts of goodies in it and they love those millet sprays. the fish get flakes, algae discs and shrimp pellets, part of the reason i grow such nice foot-long fish!

I am with LaT. I don't do people scraps, it makes for fat dogs and it makes them picky. I do cook them chicken breast and mix it with carrots and brown rice with garlic, or they get Iams or Eukanuba.

The cats eat 3 cans of fancy feast a day, and they get dry food during the day.

Always always have tons of fresh water out and toys if I am gone especially. The cats love to play with these little cat toys called "Kitty can't cope" sacks, they are burlap bags filled with catnip. The dogs love marrow bones from the butcher for treats. And my shoes.

The dog gets a dry food called Fenrier made by Bestes Futter. It is free of wheat, corn, sugar, rice, potatoes, and uses no flavour enhancer or other attractant. It is made from 80% pure meat (no meat by-products).
No table scraps for him.
Treats are mostly dried beef lung, sometimes something special, like a bit of cheese for training.
From time to time he gets a huge calf leg bone.

Our cat gets a wet food from the same producer as the dog food. No cereals, sugar, artificial additives, but 90% chicken or salmon, depending on the variety. He is quite old, and has lost some teeth, so kibble is out.
He is no fan of treats, but does get some cat milk from time to time.

The lizard gets crickets, and the crickets get a special vitamin and mineral enriched feed till the go to meet their destiny.

The fish, snails, shrimp and crayfish in the tank get special granules and food tablets, as well as dry oak leaves.

When my cats get table scraps it happens very rarely. It happened sometimes during the last year when I was too knacked or exhausted to finish my dinner (due to uni and work demands) and was too lazy to go to the kitchen (I have next to no energy since over a year it's not just a bit lazy in my case)...so I offered it to them a la take it or leave it. Overall if they do get from the table then usually it is only meat or they can lick out philadelphia cheese tin or curd tin and again, it is rare. Back home we had one cat (she died when I was 12) who figured out what is going to happen when my dad started to prepare the BBQ grill...she was waiting there way before it was time to ensure she will be getting some bacon or sausage, etc. None of our other cats was as greedy as she was about BBQ, though I am sure pepper would be just as bad if she would know about BBQ.

Thankfully none of my cats had ever weight issues. At the moment my parents have one of their two cats which is .... rather heavy...but thats the only one in my life I encoutert out of shape and in her case I think it is just overeating from normal food (seems she also goes to other places to eat). 3 of my cats are rather a bit low on weight whereas my boys are just right in that respect (heavy and damn strong muscles, but normal build). I hope my birman girl will gain weight more easily when she gets spayed after her next and final litter.

When I had aquariums back home one of my cat was always very keen to lick of some fish food which might drop out whilst opening or closing the box with the food.

Archibald the tortoise (his shell is arched and he's bald) was spoiled by Gary's sister and prefers to eat nothing but romaine lettuce. I sneak in some dried tortoise food that I reconstitute and put on the romaine. When it's really hot and he's very hungry I can get him to do some spinach. He's been offered all kinds of fruits and vegetables but won't touch them. I worry that he's not getting a proper diet but have not figured out a way to force feed a stubborn tortoise.

Ack. Yeah, his shell may well be pyramided due to severe bone deformity from the bad diet. Post a pic and I can make better guesses. Chelonians are not fun to force feed and most patients that need extensive daily assist nutrition end up getting a cut-down so it can be administered with a syringe. If this isn't practical, you'll have to sneak in what you can that's species-appropriate diet (and research that, please; it varies by species). Bright colors may help; they are attracted to those in their food.

He got dry kibble with glucosamine for his arthritis in it.

It was rare that he got any people food, and if he did it was barely a forkful as he had a sensitive stomach.

If anyone here knows that Pal Dog food is, they probably know as well as I do to NEVER give it to an inside dog.
Also Cambell's Chunky Soup isn't a good idea, it makes them fart for days and good god they stink.

It's really interesting the different views and experiences about pet food, thank you

You gave me some new ideas to research (for myself not in a big way) it a bit once my settling in after my move now as well as my dissertation are out of the way

I do agree overall in regards to no table food, until last year they never got anything other than sometimes a tiny slice of meat or sausage from the table or a piece of cheese...and thats where it will get back to from my side, however aspects such as looking out for corn and wheat I never thought about, so its really interesting for me to have new pinpointers to actually look more into the food what my furrys are eating and what is ok to have in there and what isn't...thank you all

Dogs, like people, can have allergies and other issues with wheat products and the corn can contribute to over weight dogs. I switched to Sojos with meat and veggies after dealing with some dog health problems.
