Following the idea of the quotation thread. This time, looking for lyrics which have touched, disturbed, entertained, angered but primarily had caused some sort of reaction from you, even if it was just awe at the writing.

It doesn't have to be the entire song, fragments work well here.

"No carpet on the floor
And the winding cloth holds many moths
Around your Ku Klux furniture
I cum of death-head in your frock
We discuss the murder plan
We discuss murder and the murder act
Murder takes the wheel of your Cadillac
And death climbs in the back

O DEANNA
This is a car
O DEANNA
This is a gun
O DEANNA
And this a day number one
O DEANNA
Our little crimeworn histories
Black and smoking christmas trees
And honey, it ain't mystery
Why you're a mystery to me "

Deanna- Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds

A simple song really, but when I heard it years ago..I just knew he and every man
on the planet was singing it for me and me alone. I highlighted my favoritest part.

Bob Dylans' Lay Lady Lay
Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Whatever colors you have in your mind
I'll show them to you and you'll see them shine
.

Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile
Until the break of day, let me see you make him smile
His clothes are dirty but his hands are clean
And you're the best thing that he's ever seen.

Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile
Why wait any longer for the world to begin
You can have your cake and eat it too
Why wait any longer for the one you love
When he's standing in front of you.

Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still ahead
I long to see you in the morning light
I long to reach for you in the night
Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still ahead

Okay, still a guilty pleasure from my teen years. I loved this song the first time that I heard it, the way that the imagery was so intense and a resonance to the feeling of being seperate.

Cheesy but, what can I say...

You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars
I've been living on the edge so long
Where the winds of limbo roar
And I'm young enough to look at
And far too old to see
All the scars are on the inside
I'm not sure if there's anything left of me

Don't let these shakes go on
It's time we had a break from it
It's time we had some leave
We've been living in the flames
We've been eating up our brains
Oh, please don't let these shakes go on

You ask me why I'm weary, why I can't speak to you
You blame me for my silence
Say it's time I changed and grew
But the war's still going on dear
And there's no end that I know
And I can't say if we're ever...
I can't say if we're ever gonna to be free

Veteran of the Psychic Wars- Blue Oyster Cult

Still is one of my favorites and forever will be -

Depeche Mode - Dressed in Black

She's dressed in black again
And I'm falling down again
Down to the floor again
I'm begging for more again
But oh what can you do
When she's dressed in black

My mind wanders endlessly
On paths where she's leading me
With games that she likes to play
And words that she doesn't say
Not when we're alone
And she's dressed in black

As a picture of herself
She's a picture of the world
A reflection of you
A reflection of me
And it's all there to see
If you only give in
To the fire within

Dressed in black again

Shadows fall onto me
And she stands there over me
And waits to encompass me
I lay here helplessly
But oh what can you do
When she's dressed in black

Under my thumb
The girl who once had me down
Under my thumb
The girl who once pushed me around It's down to me
The difference in the clothes she wears
Down to me, the change has come,
She's under my thumb Ain't it the truth babe? Under my thumb
The squirmin' dog who's just had her day
Under my thumb
A girl who has just changed her ways It's down to me, yes it is
The way she does just what she's told
Down to me, the change has come
She's under my thumb
Ah, ah, say it's alright Under my thumb
A siamese cat of a girl
Under my thumb
She's the sweetest, hmmm, pet in the world It's down to me
The way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come,
She's under my thumb
Ah, take it easy babe
Yeah It's down to me, oh yeah
The way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come,
She's under my thumb
Yeah, it feels alright Under my thumb
Her eyes are just kept to herself
Under my thumb, well I
I can still look at someone else It's down to me, oh that's what I said
The way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come,
She's under my thumb
Say, it's alright. Say it's all...
Say it's all...
Take it easy babe
Take it easy babe
Feels alright
Take it, take it easy babe.

I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me.

Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there's not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now.

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh, please, God, wake me.

Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I live.

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me.

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh, please, God, wake me.

Now the world is gone, I'm just one
Oh, God, help me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh, please, God, wake me

Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell.

This song, written by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich of the heavy metal rock band "Metallica", neatly summed up one of the most challenging occurrences that I have experienced in my life. The bleak feeling of utter helplessness in the betrayal of one's own body, through illness, paralysis, or witnessing or being a survivor of a horrific ordeal, may be healed over time. But the simple acknowledgement of this stage of the process seemed to validate and stop that awful feeling of isolation. The stark and gritty music to which the words are set is a sublime pairing. Kudos to these poets and musicians for capturing the essence of grief and loss.

Damien Rice - Volcano

Don't hold yourself like that
You'll hurt your knees
I kissed your mouth and back
But that's all I need
Don't build your world around volcanoes melt you down

What I am to you is not real
What I am to you you do not need
What I am to you is not what you mean to me
You give me miles and miles of mountains
And I'll ask for the sea

Don't throw yourself like that
In front of me
I kissed your mouth your back
Is that all you need?
Don't drag my love around volcanoes melt me down

What I am to you is not real
What I am to you you do not need
What I am to you is not what you mean to me
You give me miles and miles of mountains
And I'll ask what I give to you
Is just what I'm going through
This is nothing new
No no just another phase of finding what I really need
Is what makes me bleed
And like a new disease she's still too young to treat
Like a distant tree
Volcanoes melt me down
She's still too young
I kissed your mouth
You do not need me

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

The long and winding road that leads to your door, will never disappear, I’ve seen that road before. It always leads me here, leads me to your door. The wild and windy night that the rain washed away, has left a pool of tears crying for the day. Why leave me standing here, let me know the way. Many times I’ve been alone and many times I’ve cried. Anyway you’ve always known the many ways I’ve tried, but still they lead me back to the long winding road. You left me waiting here a long, long time ago. Don’t keep me standing here, lead me to your door. But still they lead me back to the long winding road. You left me waiting here a long long time ago. Don't leave me standing here, lead me to your door.

The long and winding road, Beatles

Hey there Lord it's me
I wondered if you're free
Or not asleep
This just won't keep
It seem I just don't see

Why all the things we asked
Or prayed would come to pass
Have gone unheard
Like silent words
That slip into the past

'Cause Lord they're not schemes
Can't you tell dreams
Why do you let them slip by
Never even tried

Is it you don't hear
There's far too many tears
Or can't you feel
Are we unreal
To one who knows no peers

You say we must pay dues
But still I am confused
I need to walk
And with you talk
Instead of to statues

'Cause Lord they're not schemes
Can't you tell dreams
Why do you let them slip by
Never even tried

'Cause you take all the fame
Who'll accept the blame
All the hurt
Down here on earth
Unnecessary pain
Surely you must care
Or are you only air
Built in our minds
We're in binds
Never really there

Can we be tired of you
Is that something we're allowed to do
For even the blind change their views
And it's time we tried something new

So I pled my case
I'll now pull my escape
Didn't mean to doubt
What it's all about
Seems I forgot my place

But if you find the time
Please change the story line
Or give a call
Explain it all
I'll even leave the dime

Aw shit, this is quite unfair. Music moves me like little else.
Now lots of the stuff that I like the most is instrumental so I can't post any lyrics, but there are all sorts of tunes that move me deeply when I hear them. They range from songs with serious personal memories attached,(Pearl Jam: Black, Alice In Chains: Would), classics (Hendrix: Angel) sappy Americana (Don McLean: American Pie), songs with incredible lyrics (Springsteen: Thunder Road, maybe the single best piece of poetry written as an American song...I mean c'mon, who else comes up with a line like "Make crosses of your lovers, throw roses in the rain, waste your summer praying in vain for a savior to rise from these streets.") and witty rhythms (Date Rape: Sublime, Taylor: Jack Johnson) to great songs by bands I really dislike (U2: One), but here's an old favorite that is never wrong...

If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.

Kind woman, I give you my all, Kind woman, nothing more.

Little drops of rain whisper of the pain, tears of loves lost in the days gone by.
My love is strong, with you there is no wrong,
Together we shall go until we die. My, my, my.
An inspiration is what you are to me, inspiration, look... see.

And so today, my world it smiles, your hand in mine, we walk the miles,
Thanks to you it will be done, for you to me are the only one.
Happiness, no more be sad, happiness....I'm glad.
If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.

I is shocked to hear that, GT. Shocked. Someone call a paramedic.
Laughs.
Going to California is right up there with Thank You as far as this guy is concerned, Page and Plant's ode to Joni Mitchell..

There was this one time when I was a teen, involved this girl, Houses of the Holy in the background and a pickle...

Wildflower by Skylark

She's faced the hardest times you could imagine,
And many times her eyes fought back the tears.
And when her youthful world was about to fall in
Each time her slender shoulders bore the weight of all her fears,
and her sorrow no one hears, still rings in midnight silence,
  in her ears...

Let her cry, for she's a Lady
Let her dream, for she's a Child
Let the rain fall down upon her
She's a free and gentle flower, growing wild.

And if by chance, I should hold her,
Let me hold her for a time;
But if allowed just one posession,
I would pick her from the garden, to be mine.

Be careful how you touch her, for she will waken;
and sleep's the only freedom that she knows.
And when you walk into her eyes, you won't believe;
The way she's always payin' for a debt she never owed,
and the silent wind still blows, that only she can hear,
   And so, she goes.

Let her cry, for she's a Lady
Let her dream, for she's a Child
Let the rain fall down upon her
She's a free and gentle flower, growing wild.

and now, bada bing bada boom, another favorite:

"Take It Off"

There's a place downtown,
Where the freaks all come around.
It's a hole in the wall.
It's a dirty free for all.

When the dark
Of the night comes around.
That's the time,
That the animal comes alive.
Looking for
Something wild.

And now we lookin' like pimps
In my gold Trans-Am.
Got a water bottle full of whiskey
In my handbag.
Got my drunk text on
I'll regret it in the mornin'
But tonight
I don't give a
I don't give a
I don't give a

There's a place downtown,
Where the freaks all come around.
It's a hole in the wall.
It's a dirty free for all.

And they turn me on.
When they Take It Off.
When they Take It Off.
Everybody Take It Off.

There's a place I know
If you're looking for a show.
Where they go hardcore
And there's glitter on the floor.

And they turn me on.
When they Take It Off.
When they Take It Off.
Everybody Take It Off.

Lose your mind.
Lose it now.
Lose your clothes
In the crowd.
We're delirious.
Tear it down
'Til the sun comes back around.

N-now we're getting so smashed.
Knocking over trash cans.
Eurbody breakin' bottles
It's a filthy hot mess.
Gonna get faded
I'm not the designated
Driver so
I don't give a
I don't give a
I don't give a

There's a place downtown,
Where the freaks all come around.
It's a hole in the wall.
It's a dirty free for all.

And they turn me on.
When they Take It Off.

There's a place I know
If you're looking for a show.
Where they go hardcore
And there's glitter on the floor.

And they turn me on.
When they Take It Off.

EVERYBODY TAKE IT OFF!

Right now! TAKE IT OFF!

There's a green plaid jacket on the back of the chair
It's like a moment frozen forever there

Mom and dad had a lot of big plans for their little man
So proud!
Mama's gone crazy 'cause her baby's shot down
By some teenage car chase war out of bounds
It was the wrong place wrong time wrong end of a gun.
Sad!

Shoot straight from the hip, yeah.
Gone forever in a trigger slip
Well, it could have been
It could have been your brother.
Shoot straight shoot to kill, yeah.
Blame each other, well, blame yourselves, you know
God is a bullet have mercy on us everyone

They're gonna call me sir they'll all stop picking on me
Well I'm a high school grad I'm over 5 foot 3
I'll get a badge and a gun and I'll join the P.D.
They'll see
He didn't have to use the gun they put in his hand
But when the guy came at him, well he panicked and ran
And it's a thirty long years 'fore they're givin' him another chance
And it's sad, sad, it's sad

Shoot straight from the hip, yeah.
Gone forever in a trigger slip
Well, it could have been
It could have been your mother.
Shoot straight shoot to kill, yeah.
Blame each other, well, blame yourselves, you know
God is a bullet have mercy on us everyone

Shoot straight from the hip, yeah.
Gone forever in a trigger slip
Well, it could have been
It could have been your mother.

John Lennon, Doctor King, Harvey Milk
all for goddamn nothing

God is a bullet have mercy on us everyone
God is a bullet have mercy on us everyone
