Hi Everyone i've finally gotten around to introducing myself after being here for a few days. i am a jewellery designer, who is currently finishing two degrees, one a Bachelor of Design, the other a BA in English Literature (its really a bit much studying) i'm currently (right now, this minute) working on my honours thesis which i'm supposed to be engaged in 24 hours a day (at least according to the head of my department) fortunately i have perfected the fine art of procrastination, hence, my presence here. i have had a really positive impression of what is discussed and written about in the message boards, so i'm happy to be introducing myself here. i've travelled extensively (i love travelling and in particular would love to go back to parts of south east asia that i haven't been too yet) i enjoy and appreciate music, art and literature. i paint (watercolours mostly) and am an avid photographer. i lived in London for several years working in the fashion industry as a costume jeweller - i even used to be one of the elves that made rhinestone handled whips and diamante collar and cuff sets for Agent Provocateur...i've been back in New Zealand for a while now and am having a really good time in general alot of people have asked me about the jewelled body pieces so i thought i'd quickly describe the kind of things i make. the body pieces i have made in the past range from a corset made from hand woven copper wire, to a range of laser cut, heat bent acrylic body pieces which are kind of more like see-through armour. i've decorated nipples and other bits with an assortment of beaded chain accessories that drape over the body or attach themselves to body parts as well as more standard beaded chainmail. i've worked with a range of materials and basically just do it as a hobby. i make things for friends (generally only by word of mouth) i'll use any material to make something new and unusual and as a general rule i prefer to work with sustainable materials (although i am sometimes seduced by other media) the copper corset was made from wire from a scrap metal dealer although it wasn't really weaving but brute force to shape, it took weeks to make, i had it silver plated and it's fairly uncomfortable but lined with quilted red silk. i'm not sure what else to add for the moment, but i'm sure i'll be back in the coming days and weeks (if only to escape studying for a bit) thanks to everybody who's been so supportive. bye for now maytel
